Look at the back side of your computer. You will see 3 jacks in a row. Most probably each will be colored. 1st one rose or light pink, 2nd green and the 3rd Blue. The green one is where you should plug in the earphone jack. Connect the head phone cable to the rose one. The headphone and mic cable will be identified with a small notation on the plastic portion of the jack.

Microphone is not work

Connect an external handsfree head set to the phone and check if the mic is working or you are able to be heard well. If so the mic within the phone is faulty . sometimes it can be due to a faulty connection or a block on the mic due to dirt accumulation.
If not it must be replaced with the same type and fitting.

When i plug in my mic i cannot hear my friends talk but it says my mic is in and i am talking.

You used the term "plug in my mic". I assume you mean the microsoft mic and head set. one of the best ways to check the headset and mic. is to go onto microsoft live and attempt to leave someonw a voice message. during the message you will get a message that says your mic is not working. also after you finish the voice message attempt to play if back if you do not hear anything then the problem is with your microsoft head set and attached mic. if new take if back to exchange for another one. there could possibly be something wrong with the port connection on you microsoft controller.

I use my webcam to connect with my friends and family. I can not hear them and they can not hear eighter. Do I need a microphone or does my laptop have a microphone installed?

Please check the booklet/user guide which came with the computer. Does it say that there is a built in mic. If it is there then no need for a separate mic. But if there is no mic then you have to buy a head set with a mic and connect it to the computer in place provided in the computer. It is generally near the audio output.

I install a gear head web cam but the other person cannot hear me

You do not say what your OS is, if your computer is laptop or desktop or what program you want to chat in

Set up Audio

Laptop x webcam/mic x Vista x Yahoo Messenger

If you have an earlier OS, you may have to access your hardware from the Control Panel.

TEST SPEAKERS
Right click on speaker icon in System Tray
Select "Playback Devices"
The speaker icon ( checked as working) and volume level graph should be visible
Right click on the volume graph and click "Test"
Left hand speakers followed by right hand should be heard

SET DEFAULT & TEST MIC
Click "Recording" tab.
To set required mic as default - click on mic font to highlight and click "Properties"
In lower dropbox display "Use this device enable" click OK
Click "Levels" tab and ramp up sliders ( adjust to suit later)
Return to "Recording". Test mic by speaking and make sure volume graph displays
Restart computer
CONFIGURE TO MESSENGER

Open messenger - on top toolbar. Left click ( > ) Messenger > Preferences > Connection - Select 'no proxies' or 'connect direct to the internet' depending on the version of messenger you have
make sure your internet connection and country are correct in the lower two boxes > Apply > OK

Click ( > ) Messenger > Preferences > Calling and Audio
Set mic and speakers to show Default equipment
Run call up assistant to test audio equipment > Apply > OK

Other chat programs are less intensive for audio set up - Skype and MSN can be navigated via the 'Tools' option on the toolbar.

Headset Microphone doesn't work

Plugged in? Is it a stereo plug? does your computer allow speaker and mic on the same wire? Does the outlet say Mic or Headset of Both? Had it worked in the past.

Some computers have a place for a mic - some for headset - some might have both. On a desktop, I would expect to find separate connections. Laptop, Id have to look.

A 'stereo' plug will have a tip, ring and barrel connection.

A 'mono' plug will have a tip and barrel connection only.

A stereo plug would allow a mic and head phone connection ujsing a 'common' for the return.

A mono plug would allow either a mic or a headset, not both.

If you could peer into the jack inside your computer, you could tell if it privides for three wire (stereo) or two wire (mono) operation.

I hope this helps ... If I missed your question, please reask.
