Just replaced the timer myself on a Kenmore 80 series washer. i also had to replace the dial and knob because the plastic was worn. The washer seems to work but none of the settings match up correctly. Did I mess up when I put on the dial?

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.
First, see the Sears parts site for your washer(s):
You gotta pull out a rod behind the timer and that releases the knob. The rod when pushed into the timer spreads the shaft and holds it on there. To get to the innards you gotta flip up the controls. I have a cool video that shows how
Something in the timer came apart. Timer needs replaced. When in good working order, the timer should ONLY ever be turned clockwise..Reversing this could break it.
If you are talking about the Cycle Selection knob, turn the washer to an OFF position, or unplug. I can't remember if you need to pull the knob out or leave pushed in, but the knob will come off by turning it counter-clockwise. After unscrewing it and removing, the plastic dial under the center knob will simply pull off. I hope this helps you. If you need further assistance, please let me know.
The knob is a simple screw on knob and the replacement part number is 3353309. Cost is 16.50. It will have a metal back as opposed to the plastic one you must have now. Shipping would Should you choose to order, follow this link: http://www.repairclinic.com/SmartSearch/SmartSearch.aspx
