Dear Madmonk,
Your camera has problem in CCD Imager IC and will be replaced. Please go to nearest Sony service shop.

No image in either viewfinder or lcd


CCD Imager in your camera id bad and needs to be replaced. Follow the Sony web link for details.

Sony offers various models repair with CCD Imager issue free of cost but I couldn't find your model in that list. Contact nearest Sony Service Center for guide lines.

Hi,
Your camera DCR-HC20 has problem with ccd imager and this part will be replaced. After that camera will show live view to record.
Sony announced free of cost repair scheme for such problem. You will pay shipping charges only $15

When the product is used in camera mode, the liquid crystal display (LCD) panel and/or electronic viewfinder displays either a distorted image or no image at all.

Sony Corporation has determined that this condition occurs very rarely, but may be accelerated if an affected product is exposed to high temperature and/or high humidity environments.

In an effort to ensure customer satisfaction, Sony of Canada Ltd. has elected to offer, effective October 3, 2005, free out-of-warranty repair to owners of affected Sony digital camera, camcorder and PDA products that exhibit the aforementioned condition caused by the image sensor device. See below for a list of affected models:

It has recently come to our attention that a limited number of Sony Camcorders that incorporate an image sensor device, CCD Chip, manufactured from October 2002 through March 2004 may exhibit the following condition:


When the Camcorder is used in camera mode, the LCD panel and/or electronic viewfinder will show either a distorted image or no image.


We have determined that this condition only occurs to a limited number of units.


In its effort to ensure customer satisfaction, Sony has elected to offer a free repair to the owners of applicable Camcorders if the image sensor device, CCD chip, causes one of the above-mentioned conditions. No picture on viewfinder or LCD when trying to record or playback, but the info is there, ie tape time, battery power, zoom ect. Would this be a setting or hardware prob. thanks


This is a common CCD defect in numerous Sony and other digital cameras. It will be covered free of charge by Sony even if the equipment is out of warranty. Check this site: http://www.imaging-resource.com/badccds.html and use the link there to get your free repair!
