Question about Canon Digital Rebel / EOS-300D Digital Camera with EF-S 18-55mm Lens
Unfortunately it is not possible to preview the picture on the camera's LCD screen before you take it.
The 300D is an SLR camera. What this means is that as light comes in through the lens it is deflected by a mirror (which sits in front of the sensor) up to the viewfinder. When you take a picture, the mirror flips up out of the way and a mechanical shutter opens, exposing the sensor to the incoming light. Because the mirror and shutter are in the way of the sensor, it is not possible to have a 'live preview'.
Compact cameras (which do allow you to preview the image on the LCD screen) work in a different way. They have a completely separate viewfinder, and they do not have a mechanical shutter - The signal from the sensor is simply switched electronically between the LCD screen and the memory.
On the plus side, although you might not be used to using a viewfinder, you will find the image you see is a lot bigger and a lot brighter that those you get on a compact camera.
Hope this helps,
