Question about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S700 Digital Camera
I have this Sony Cybershot camera. I recently inserted a Sony memory stick of 1 GB into it and when I turn on the camera, it gives "Format Error"
The camera works fine with Internal memory. Please advise on what to do.
Thanks in advance,
When I insert the Memory Card, it shows "Format Error"
There is no tools feature on the sony...select the 1st button lower right...all touch screen features appear...select menu in lower
left...select setup...camera 1 will display...select down arrow
twice until you reach format, the select...that should reformat

It could be a faulty memory card, but a more likely cause is that this stick isn't formatted yet. you can format it usually by bringing up the camera menu, then going to tools and format. you can also format it by using windows and a cardreader or your camera.

SOURCE: dsc-s700 format error
If you have a computer with a memory card reader that takes the stick. insert it into the computer and goto my computer find the memory stick drive letter and format it their then retry the stick in the camera. also try to go into the cameras menu and try formatting it their if you cannot format the stick it is very possible it is bad.

SOURCE: Format Error in Sony Cybershot
I think I solve the problem wih my sony camera.
After readin almost all posts on this problem I lost hope to save my photos from that "Format error" stick. So first I start to format the memory with the camera, after 5-6 minutes it says everything is formated. I restarted the camera but again there was a memory error message, but this time the blue screen has gone and I can see where lens are pinting. After that i start the format function again on my camera, but after a few seconds (just at the moment when it starts to format) i took put the batteries. When I put the batteries again the memory stick pro duo was empty. So I downloaded a program for memory restore (Rescover my Photos) Here is a link with program with C.. R... A.. C... K... http://www.2baksa.net/news/27705/
So that program found all the pictures and the movies that were on that stick. You must take a deep scan to the memory and have a full battery life to take out the pictures. So, good luck.
