Can't power on easily

Hi i have a power problem. You see when i am watching my tv it runs fine but when i shut it off for an hour or longer it wont turn back on ..well it does but i have to keep hitting the power button till it turns on .if i hold the power button it blinks 5 times then blinks 1 more time then nothing..(the light on the power button not the screen )..eventually it does start up just takes a while .and i hear a ticking noise to the right side of the tv when it is trying to start up .If you just push the power button normally ..it does a series of trying to start up 3 times then doesn't do anything till you hit the button again (and you have to wait about 1 minute before it will accept the new button press). If you sit there and keep hitting the button eventually it goes through its power startup procedure, but it can take 35-55 minutes.it will finally start up the screen ..it has been so frustrating that i have simply left the tv on 24/7 and just change to a blank signal source when it's not in use. Also, when the TV finally starts up, the display is very wavy for the first 30 seconds or so before it settles down.
I don't live in the US, and the repair places I have checked (I live in Trinidad) all say that they will need to get the unit in hand, and then diagnose the problem then order the parts. This will mean that I will be without a TV for like a month (not an option).
I am an electrical engineer, so I should be able to replace any part that is causing the problem myself. However I need to know what part is causing the issue, so that I can order it. Even if I get it fixed professionally, having the part in hand before I carry it in will let me get my TV back way faster.

Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
James K.

that doesn't really help. I searched the net quite a bit before giving up and paying for this service.
Can't you find a free copy of the actual service manual (I've already found the insanely expensive ones). Or maybe find a solution from someone else who has had this same problem and got it fixed.

I know it's not a solder problem. the reason the power button will occationally be non-responsive is that after I press power, and the tv tries 3 times to boot up, it will lock out the controls for about a minute. So all the buttons seem to be working (not a solder problem).
Can you tell me what the blink codes for holding down the power button means. Now when I hold down the power button I get "9 blinks, a short pause and then 9 blinks again" this repeats a few times before finally turning blank again.
that web site too was no help. I know there is a service manual available for the TV, I've seen it online for like $100. Can you access that?

Hi have a nice day!
begin from power on switch ; have a look at it's board solders, resolder if necessary, and by the way check for any other loose connection or bad solder.
Good Luck

Where the TV is dead and a startup problem is suspected, you would test for startup problems by injecting a signal into the base of the HOT of about 15.75 kHz.

If the TV then starts and runs once this signal is removed, the diagnosis is confirmed. This is risky as you know - you can blow things up if not careful (including yourself).

A 555 timer based circuit will work fine as a signal source for this.

WARNING: be careful if you do this.

The HOT circuit may be line-connected and it is possible to destroy the HOT and related components if this is not done properly. I once managed to kill not only the HOT but the chopper transistor as well while working in this area.

    An expensive lesson.

My KP-51HW40 clicks off after running for a period. The red power light blinks when it goes off but screen stays dark. When TV is shut off for a while it restarts and runs fine. The "On"...

Hi,
KP-51HW40 shuts off due to incorrect white balance and blue arch lines is an evidence of that incorrect white balance. I hope tv standby red light would flashing 5 times then 3 seconds pause and again 5 times when tv shuts down.
This is rear projection tv that has three picture tubes (red-green-blue) inside to generate picture that projected at front screen. These three picture tubes must be drive with correct drive voltage to produce good picture of each color.
Solution for your tv problem is Screen Voltage adjustment that can be done easily if you are handy with electronics stuff repair.
Let me know your expertise level to guide you more and if you feel unconformable by tv repair then local tv repairman will help you to adjust white balance in tv.
Hope these info will help you.
Let me know if you have additional questions.
Thanks.

Hi there i have a sony grand wega kf-42sx300u and the red green on off light started flashing and then the lamp light comes on i guess its just the lamp that needs replacing .. i've had the tv about 6 six...

The lamp is generally rated at 2000 hours so I would say you have done quite well. You must not watch too much TV as that would equate to a little more than 1 hour a day. There are a number of online resources where you can purchase a replacement lamp such as partstore.com and others. As I recall you will need to remove the lower trim panel to expose the lamp compartment to gain access for replacement. One key to long life on any set that uses a high intensity lamp is to allow the TV to go through its normal "cool down" cycle. Never have your sets AC power interrupted before the set cools down. After the set is shut off the fan keeps running until the unit cools sufficiently. This prolongs the life of the lamp. Some stores would have all their sets on a power strip and cut AC power instantly at the end of the day and consequently replaced many expensive lamps that could have lasted much longer.

When turning on the TV, I hear a banging/grinding sound.

Hi,

If you hear a grinding, whirling, spining or buzzing sound, that sounds to me like the COLOR WHEEL,the reason for that is because your color wheel spins at 5,000 rpms(revolution per minute) and something that modifies the balance of the disc can cause different things,Unfortionatelly the only way to check that the color wheel is working properlyis you need to check it out physically

I did some research and I found the color wheel at DM;http://www.discount-merchant.com/Samsung-Replacement-Color-Wheel-HLS-HLT-Series-p/samsungcolor_wheel_bp96-01579a.htm?CLICK=52978

Please keep us posted.

TV goes off intermittently

sounds like an intermittent shut down which is heat related. some part , maybe one stuck on a heatsink is warming up and running too much current triggering shutdown.
to find it you can tell what is shutting down with a voltmeter, or you can heat suspected parts with a blow dryer to speed the shutdown .. or freeze spray to see if it goes beyond your shutdown time.

Need Help big screen turns on thens goes off

a tv has two components, firstly a power supply produces high voltage to trigger a line transformer, in turn a transformer produces smaller voltages. firstly check if the ht is constantly been produced from a supply, if this is there than go to a line transformer, and check voltages at the output.
