what was your error when installing the drivers? Also, Dell will typically have several different versions of video drivers available for any given system. Are you sure you downloaded the appropriate driver for your video card/subsystem?

Why width of my display of 17' crt monitor model

The screen resolution probably set incorrectly.
Go to Control Panel - Display - Settings tab and move the Screen resolution slider, try 1024 x 768 resolution first.

Tip

"Aero features are'nt running in window's 7"

Solution: Check that your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements for running Aero:

1-gigahertz (GHz) 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 gigabyte (GB) of random access memory (RAM)

128-megabyte (MB) graphics card

Aero also requires a DirectX 9 class graphics processor that supports a Windows Display Driver Model Driver, Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware, and 32 bits per pixel.

For best results, you might also want to follow these graphics processor recommendations:

64 MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor with a resolution that is less than 1,310,720 pixels (for example, a 17–inch flat panel LCD monitor that has a 1280 × 1024 resolution)

128 MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor with a resolution from 1,310,720 to 2,304,000 pixels (for example, a 21.1–inch flat panel LCD monitor that has up to a 1600 × 1200 resolution)

256 MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor with a resolution greater than 2,304,000 pixels (for example, a 30–inch wide-screen flat panel LCD monitor that has up to a 2560 × 1600 resolution)

To turn on window frame transparency, the color scheme must first be set to Windows Aero.

1.Open Personalization by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Personalization.

2.Click Window Color and Appearance.

3.Select the Enable transparency check box.

To change the color scheme to Windows Aero

1.Open Appearance Settings by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, clicking Personalization, and then clicking Window Color and Appearance. If the Appearance Settings dialog box is not displayed, at the bottom of the page, click Open classic appearance properties.

2.In the Color scheme list, click Windows Aero, and then click OK.

Check that your theme is an aero theme and not a normal theme. Themes are available in normal and aero and can be confusing. Set your theme as an aero theme and you should get the aero window working.

These steps will help us to have AERO running.

How do i get my computer out of the resolution mode?

Apparently the monitor screen resolution setting is not correct. Screen resolution stays up until it is corrected.

Either the setting is off in Windows, or you have been changing the monitor settings, with the monitor.

WinXP:

Right-click on an empty area of your desktop screen.
Left-click on Properties at the bottom of the list.
Left-click on the Settings tab.
Go down to where it states Screen Resolution.

What is the pixel setting? For example mine states 1600 x 900 pixels.
I am running dual monitors, and this is the correct screen resolution for the Primary monitor.

If it wasn't I would Left-click on the Slider, hold the left mouse button down, and slide the Slider to the correct native resolution.

(Under Screen Resolution is a line. To the left it states - Less
To the right of the line it states - More
The Slider is the rectangular down arrow on the line )

ALSO;
Under the Color quality heading, make sure in the box under it, that it states - Highest (32 bit)
IF not, left-click on the blue down arrow to the right.
Then left-click right on - Highest (32 bit)

How to know what is the native resolution for your monitor?
Look at the manufacturer name, and the model number on the back.
Type this information in your browser search bar, then click on the search icon.

Look for Specifications.

If you changed the screen resolution settings with the monitor, press the Menu button. The screen should go off.

ALSO, with a new monitor there is an Installation CD Disk, provided with it.
This disk MUST be used. It has the drivers for the monitor on it.

[ Drivers: Small pieces of software that allow the Operating System to 'communicate' with a device.

The monitor is a Device.
Windows XP, and Windows 7 are two examples of an O/S.
Operating System ]

Acer flat panel monitor with dell dimension 4600 desktop, i am having a resolution problem. Icons are blurry, or fuzzy. the computer does not have a DVI port to connect to the monitor. I have used only VGA...

the issue is most likely the resolution you set the panel to. also make sure you select a generic flat panel driver under the Display properties EXP: if your panel is a 17" Panel chosse 1a driver with a max resolution of 1024X768 @ 60hz to start and go on from there you will solve it.. let me know if you need more help.. My monitor gives 16-bit color at 640x480, but will only offer 256 colors at 1024x768 -- and only displays 16 colors when I select that... In order to access resolution options, I have to go into Advanced...

The monitor has no influence here - something is wrong with your video card: either its driver is missing (or corrupted) or the video chip has failed.
Uninstall all the drivers for the video(except the generic VGA one), from Programs and Device Manager
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/f/open-device-manager-windows-7.htm
and reboot several times then go to Dell
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
select your pc and get the correct driver.
If that doesn't fixes it then the video chip has failed, you will need to buy a new video card.

I switch my monitor from a 17 inch to 26 inch but on the new monitor its still at the 17 inch instead of the 26 inch

Change your video resolution to match the new monitor. Right click in a blank area on your desktop go to properties and change your resolution (in XP). In Vista or Windows 7, after right clicking on your desktop, choose Screen Resolution (about the 3rd one up from the bottom of choices).

I have knocked a button on my laptop the screen has gone small i can not make it bigger i have been into properties but dont know where to go next

Position your Mouse on your Desktop. Just on the background. Right click. Select Properties. Select the 'Settings' Tab. You can select the resolution of "800 x 600" for larger icons or if you want more desktop area move to the right. I am set to "1400 x900"

The other setting you should look for is the Color Quality. Generally this should be largest number. IE 32 bit.

AMW 19" LCD Monitor

go to NVDIA web site download the latest driver.
you need at least 32bit color to setup the monitor.
the 8-bit color is a default, that is why the monitor alway return to default size which is 800x600.
19" monitor should have minimum of 1280x1024 with 32 color.
don't up the color 256bit. the color will be off on the monitor.

My desktop is not centered and the fonts are too big. Also my Start button and bottom toolbar have disappeared.

Sounds like your resolution has been set too low.

Firstly, i'm going to assume you have a 17" LCD monitor, and that you are running Windows XP. (what a guess!) =-]

Generally, you'd want to right-click the desktop in a blank area, select properties. This gives you the display properties. Go to the last tab across called "settings", then under "screen resolution", drag the slider up a notch and hit apply. If it looks right, leave it at that. If it's not quite right, go another notch and apply. Keep going until you have it right.

But on your 17" LCD monitor, running the DVI cable to the PC... the computer should already have detected it's maximum resolution. In this case, you can drag the slider all the way to the right and hit apply, knowing that this is the optimal resolution. Also on your Dell LCD, you should have several buttons for adjusting the screen. One of those buttons is usually a "self-adjust" or "auto detect" or "some other obvious thing" for self-adjusting the screen viewable area. It *should* do this automatically when you change resolutions, which your Dell 173FPb should do anyway. =-]
