Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I have a Western Digital My Book external drive which has been working perfectly. However during an automatic backup yesterday it returned a message that the backup failed and the reason was "system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)." I have no documentation or idea what this means or how I can fix it. Please advise.

That will typically mean that the backup software was trying to backup a file that was deleted sometime between when the initial index of all the files was made and when the actual file was to be backed up. This typically happens with temporary files or files in a browser cache or similar. If you were using your machine at the time of the backup, it is even more likely to occur. I would suggest you look at the log file and see exactly what file(s) wasn't backed up.

ERROR 1002

This error can occur during a system recovery, and choosing the backup option to an external hard drive. The recovery might stop responding, and an Error 1002 message displays. To resolve the error, follow these steps:
  1. After the error message displays, turn off the computer.
  2. Disconnect the external hard disk drive. The backup is still useable.
  3. To continue the system recovery, restart the computer.
  4. Press F11 repeatedly at startup.
  5. Select Advanced Options , and then select System Recovery .
  6. When given the choice, choose to continue without a backup.
  7. After system recovery is complete, restore files from the external hard disk drive.

External Hard Drive isn't recognized on new Vista Computer

here are several possibilities
Bad Cable - Well it is probably unlikely, but I would first try another USB cable just to make sure the cable is not damaged.
2. Power Supply - Try another power supply if you have or can borrow one
3. Controller Failed – The Controller inside it has failed.
4.Drive Failure – The Hard Disk inside has failed. Drives typically have an average 5 year lifespan, some last longer and some can fail much sooner. Unfortunately, you rarely have any warning, thus the need for backups.

I need to download the file ARCSOFT for a WESTERN DIGITAL external hard drive. Is this possible

You are referring to a software which was preloaded on your hard drive and it appears you lost this program. Western Digital provides on their website a few tools, but not the preloaded programs on your drive (except for the backup program tools intially installed.

I reccomend calling Western Digital and ask them how to obtain this software.

Hello, i have a western digital 500gb my book hard drive. had a problem with pc yesterday. when booted up, lots of the programs started opening themselves and i had difficulty shuting it down. turned off...

You have experienced a system emergency shutdown. In otherwords, your computer crashed. You can:
1: reinstall your operating system.
2: use a OS recovery disk to reboot the system.
3: send the computer to a data recovery specialist.
4: return the computer if the warranty is still valid.

Good Luck!

I don't know how to access my Western Digital Backup. I have no icon to click.

hi

If you have a WD Media Center, Dual-option Combo, or Dual-option USB external hard drive, you can use the Retrospect Express software that comes with the drive to create a backup schedule that will backup your data onto the drive.

To setup an automatic duplicate schedule in Retrospect Express 6.5 on a PC, please follow the instructions below.
  1. Start Retrospect Express by pressing the Automatic Backup button on the front of your Media Center external hard drive after you have installed the Retrospect software and powered on and connected the drive.

  2. You will be presented with the Western Digital Automatic Backup Wizard. Click Next to continue.

  3. Highlight the drive(s) that contains the data you wish to backup and click Next. To select multiple drives or folders, hold down the Ctrl key and make your selections.

  4. You will have a choice to backup your documents only or all files, make your selection and click Next.

  5. Highlight the drive you wish to copy your data to and click Next.

  6. You will have the option to run the data duplication daily or once a week. Make your selection and click Next.

    • If you choose a daily duplication, you will have to select the time that you'd like the duplication to start each day, then click Next.

    • If you choose a weekly duplication, you will have to select the day and time that you'd like the duplication to start, then click Next.

    • If you wish to run the duplication one time when you are finished setting up the schedule, check the Start the backup now box and click Finish. Otherwise, just click Finish.

    • You will see the Automatic backup button glow a solid blue. When the blue light is on it indicates that the automatic duplication schedule is enabled and your duplication is set to run at the scheduled time.
For the duplication to run successfully, you must have both the computer and drive powered on and connected correctly at the scheduled time.
