Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Western Digital My Book external drive which has been working perfectly. However during an automatic backup yesterday it returned a message that the backup failed and the reason was "system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)." I have no documentation or idea what this means or how I can fix it. Please advise.

That will typically mean that the backup software was trying to backup a file that was deleted sometime between when the initial index of all the files was made and when the actual file was to be backed up. This typically happens with temporary files or files in a browser cache or similar. If you were using your machine at the time of the backup, it is even more likely to occur. I would suggest you look at the log file and see exactly what file(s) wasn't backed up.

Windows 7 is saying that my western digital essential 1 tb is possibly corrupt. I can see my files and use them. I was going to use it to set up my backup for windows 7

if you can access or see your usb drive
click start control panel administrative tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now start or you might tick one box then return after its finished the first repair then return and tick the second box you should not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive
I found that you get best results by ticking one box then returning after it has finished then tick the other box
hope this helps you

My husband has the 500G WD external hard drive which has worked perfectly until yesterday. Now when he plugs it in, the computer doesn't recognize that anything has been plugged into the USB and it's not...

Try it on another computer to see if it is working. Sometimes the USB cable can fail, too, so if you have another USB cable that fits, try it.

If it still does not work, perhaps the drive has failed.

Mac not recognizing External Western Digital HD.

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml

download and install the software then restart your mac.

Erase complete backup from external hard drive. Also, how do I erase individual backups. Thank You.

Just format the drive - unless you have other stuff on it.
Be careful - make doubly sure that the drive you are formating is the extenal drive!!

Backing up my hard drive before recovering entire system

Hi bigdaddyrick,

Some of the Western Digital external's come with software that you can load that has automatic backup, but you'd have to have set it up and would of probaby know that it had one. So, I'm going to guess that one was never loaded. So, yes, I'd back up all of your data prior to formatting it back to the factory defaults.

Good Luck and don't forget to leave a rating.

Thanks Mark

Western Digital My Book ES Edition 500 MB

Hi calicali,

Are you using Western Digital's built-in software to try backups, or just dragging or copying/pasting manually?

If you can use more detail I can help you.
