Select EconoFast or Draft as the print quality setting in the printer properties. This will prevent the color cartridge from being used.

Try another color cartridge. The color cartridge is used to print grayscale images in Normal or Best print modes, so if one color has run out, the printout will have the wrong tint. With a full color cartridge, the colors can be properly combined to create a composite black.
When printing with Normal or Best as the print quality setting, the HP Deskjet 710C or 720C or 722C series printer will use the color ink to improve print quality output, even when printing a grayscale image.
Hello cmcclung147 You certainly didn' t mess up , I can assure you . Generally , with power of and gently lifting the carriage and manually moving it from left to right and/or vice versa , plugging power back on , solves the problem . I succeeded that way with my 930C . Should work with your device . Good luck ! Best regards , fanaudi .
You have a faulty carriage mechinism in your printer. you can try putting a drop of sewing maching oil on the carriage rail (the silver bar inside the printer that the head goes back and forth across), but if this fails, your unit is not repairable as hp do not supply parts for their inkjet range of printers.
You'll need to clean the encoder strip, encoder wheel, paper feed rollers and the carriage rod (where the cartridges ride -plus lube this) and cartridge service station. If you can't figure out how to do this, you'll need a tech that knows how. It will get pretty involved and I would recommend getting a new machine because they have come down in price and you could replace this for very little.
