I have a 830 deskjet with the same problem. The part is worth far more than the printer. The cheapest so far I have found was 30.00 + shipping. So... I am looking for a used one that has the same Carriage Drive Belt that I can use. I went to and found my printer and the part no. The site mentions all the printers that part will fit. So now I can scout around and see if I can find one.

The only reason I am going through all this trouble is that I have just bought 2 sets of ink cartrigdes for this printer. They cost more than a new printer.

    Good luck

HP 722C has quit printing black in color draft

WORKAROUND: Select EconoFast or Draft as the print quality setting in the printer properties. This will prevent the color cartridge from being used. - Or - Try another color cartridge. The color cartridge is used to print grayscale images in Normal or Best print modes, so if one color has run out, the printout will have the wrong tint. With a full color cartridge, the colors can be properly combined to create a composite black. CAUSE: When printing with Normal or Best as the print quality setting, the HP Deskjet 710C or 720C or 722C series printer will use the color ink to improve print quality output, even when printing a grayscale image.

Hello cmcclung147
You certainly didn' t mess up , I can assure you .
Generally , with power of and gently lifting the carriage and manually moving it from left to right and/or vice versa , plugging power back on , solves the problem . I succeeded that way with my 930C . Should work with your device .
Good luck !

The print cartridge will not move

There is a "belt" (with pulleys at each end, and the carrridge in the middle) that pulls the carriage from edge-to-edge.

If that belt is broken, or the clamp that connects the belt to the carriage is broken, the carriage will not move.

It's cheaper to replace the printer, and responsibly recycle the old printer, than it would be to try to repair the printer.

When I turn it on, the ink cartridge does not move to the center, and the green and orange light both blink. It won't print

That condition would seems to indicate a paper jam or carriage stall on your product. HP support has the following information here:

All three lights flashing, tray for cartridges inside housing

You have a faulty carriage mechinism in your printer. you can try putting a drop of sewing maching oil on the carriage rail (the silver bar inside the printer that the head goes back and forth across), but if this fails, your unit is not repairable as hp do not supply parts for their inkjet range of printers.

I would try to clean the contacts that go against the cartridge.  Use rubbing alcohol.

Printer problem

You'll need to clean the encoder strip, encoder wheel, paper feed rollers and the carriage rod (where the cartridges ride -plus lube this) and cartridge service station. If you can't figure out how to do this, you'll need a tech that knows how. It will get pretty involved and I would recommend getting a new machine because they have come down in price and you could replace this for very little.
