Question about HP Photosmart C6180 All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

Auto document feeder has broken gear

The drive gear assembly for the ADF clips into the underside of the ADF cover--it is a 3 inch shaft with a half inch diameter gear on the end. It has two broken teeth. I just cannot find any reference to this part anywhere online. It is the same as an HP 5610 All-In-One. Anyone have access to a part number or how to get one of these gears?

Thank you Bandana_gyrl ! You have just helped Public Education in California ( http://www.tcoe.org/ERS/Repair.shtm ). Could you answer a couple of questions about getting access to HP part numbers for me?

  • Garylin Mar 11, 2008

I just wanted to let you all know that HP email support told me I had to call the 800 number. I figured it would take less time if I fixed the two broken teeth myself, so I did with some JB Weld epoxy patch, a Dremel tool and some jeweler's files. It is less than perfect, but works quiet as a mouse. I notched down into the gear hub a tooth length to give a good foundation, then shaped a block of JB Weld in place, let it harden and Dremel'd and filed the new teeth out of the block.

BTW: I got a survey from HP about how I liked the support...(grin)

I have been using partsurfer for a long time, and we have a parts account with HP. I just don't understand why parts like this aren't available. I also would like to know if HP gives access to more parts to its Authorized Servicers, or if they are stuck with the same information from PartSurfer as us.

The part number for the printer is Q8191-60006. You may be able to find online but if not you should call hp and if the printer is less than a year old they will ship free of charge - over a year and they will charge for the part but at least you will know you are getting the right one.

Normally parts would be available to order from HP Partsurfer but it does not look like they will allow you to add it so I am guessing not available.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner in regards to the part numbers through hp. Glad to hear that you have it back up and working. In case that doesn't hold for too long keep your eye on hp part surfer. It is from hp that you would be getting the part and prices and ordering are all there if the part is available.

    Have fun printing!

HP does have access to more parts then those found on part surfer - BUT they are doing away with providing parts for older products. Often they just look to have a customer upgrade their printer at a discount so it is becoming more and more difficult to find the replacement part you may need.

Note : If documents remain in the ADF after pressing the Stop/Reset button during scanning, "DOCUMENT IN ADF" appears on the LCD. Press the OK button so that the remaining document is automatically fed out.

When rescanning the document after clearing the error, rescan it from the first page.

Note: The document may not feed properly depending on the media type, or your environment, such as when the temperature and humidity are either too high or too low.
In this case, reduce the number of document pages to approximately half of the loading capacity. Another alternative is to scan from the platen glass

HP Officejet Pro LP 7880 feeder does not work, how to fix it?

Step one: Check the paper in the ADF The condition of the paper or the amount of paper loaded in the ADF might prevent the ADF from picking it up and feeding it through the product.
  1. Make sure that no more than 50 sheets of paper are in the ADF input tray.
  2. Make sure the original is not photo paper or carbon paper. These types of originals must be loaded on the scanner glass.
  3. Make sure the original document that is loaded in the ADF meets the following criteria:
    • Free from curls, folds, creases, and tears
    • Does not have staples or clips attached
Step two: Make sure the ADF pick assembly is in good working condition
  1. Remove the document feeder and open the ADF cover.
  2. While lifting the blue-green lever, carefully rotate the pick assembly toward the open ADF cover until it stops.
  3. Examine the pick assembly.
    • Make sure the bottom roller is held firmly in place by the two-catch, which is located to the left and the right of the roller.
    • Make sure the stack stopper, which is located between the top and bottom rollers, fits within the double slots just above the bottom roller. The stack stopper should move freely within the double slots to flow up and down when the whole pick assembly is lifted and lowered into position.
  4. Return the pick assembly to its original position.
  5. When the product is turned on, the top roller will reset to its original position above the separator pad. There will be a gap between the separator pad and the top roller.
  6. If there is no gap between the ADF top roller and the separator pad, press the Power button to turn off the product.
  7. Wait three to five seconds and then press the Power button to turn the product on. The ADF rollers should reset to the correct positions.
  8. Close the ADF cover and replace the document feeder.
Step three: Clean the rollers and separator pad
  1. Remove the document feeder and open the ADF cover.
  2. While lifting the blue-green lever, carefully rotate the pick assembly toward the open ADF cover until it stops.
  3. Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from it.
  4. Use the damp cloth to wipe any residue off the rollers and the separator pad. If the residue does not come off using distilled water, use isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol on the cloth instead.
  5. Return the pick assembly to its original position.
  6. Close the ADF cover and replace the document feeder.
Step four: Detaching and re-attaching the ADF pick roller assembly If the ADF pick assembly is detached or not connected properly, follow the steps below to resolve the issue. If the ADF pick assembly works well, do not perform these steps.
  1. Press the Power button to turn off the All-in-One.
  2. Remove the document feeder and open the ADF cover.
  3. Press the blue-green ADF-release button to release the ADF rollers from the pick assembly as shown in the figure below (the red arrow is pointing to the ADF release button).
  4. Re-attach the ADF pick rollers by placing the rollers into the roller slot of the ADF pick assembly as shown in the figure below. The red arrows show the gears on the ADF pick assembly aligned on one side. The yellow arrows point to the two-catch notch.
  5. Once the rollers are placed on the two-catch notch, push them in, so that the two-catch clicks into place. The photo below shows a correctly installed ADF pick assembly.
  6. Close the ADF assembly and cover.
  7. Turn the product on and make a copy with the ADF to check that the pick assembly works.

HP Laserjet M3035xs ADF Assembly?

The blue plastic piece is the clip that holds it all together. Facing the front of the printer. Open the top cover of the ADF. Flip the assembly with the green and blue plastic to the left. Hold the the squarish looking plastic frame in your hand so that you can see the black gears, with those to the back of the printer and the shiny silver shaft with the roller on it to the right. Now locate the notch on the piece you flipped back that has the blue plastic clips sticking into it. The silver shaft snaps in there. It does not feel right, but if it does not fall out when you close the adf door, you've got it. If there are other pieces loose, perhaps I can get you a few pictures from the one we have in the shop right now.

Canon MX850 printer - ADF copy has black line on it

Hello, my name is Steve,.
This is a common problem and an easy fix.
If you lift the ADF / top cover assembly up, you will see a small narrow piece of glass next to the flat-bed glass.

Ths is called a "Slit-glass". The only purpose is to read content from that point by the scanner, The Scanner will sit in the underside of it.

It is dirty. Wipe this with glass cleaner and a soft lint-free cloth. you may need to do this several times. Concentrate the part of the glass were this image problem is just by the orientation of the document you are installing with the direction of the document you are passing through the ADF.

It will take several attempts, but with each try, make a new test from the original document, unyil the problem disappears.

I believe this will solve your problem, Best , Steve

Vertical lines when scanning using automatic document feeder...Glass is clean

It is not in the glass. More than likely it is in the rollers of the ADF feeder. If you open the cover of the ADF feeder you can see there are 3 screws (! is found under another small cover furthest to the back of the machine. Once these three screws are removed you can left the entire ADF feeder from the unit. You will then be able to clean all the rollers. Do not use alcohol as this will dry our your rollers and cause them to eventually crack. Just use soap and water to clean the rollers. Then reinstall the ADF feeder assembly back on the machine.

Jam in the document feeder

I think I found my answer. You don't have to un do any screws. Lift up the cover to the automatic feeder. You will see a spring on the side of the mechanism towards the front; remove the spring; that will allow you to lift up the little arm the spring was attached to and remove the roller or bar and the light blue/green plate just under it. Then you will be able to see the jammed paper, which which I was able to carefully pull out with a pair of tweezers. Some was under rubber rollers, but when I pulled the paper sideways it slipped out. Now it works!
