I tried your solution, and I got the lense cleaned, but now when I try to close the ps2 the disk holder raises up too high so I can't close the ps2. i didn't do anything other than clean the laser so i am not sure what I could have done or what I can do to fix this new problem. Please help if u have any ideas.

Hi,the unit needs to have the laser reader lens cleaned but DON'T use regular rubbing alcohol. Get pure stuff....the rubbing type leaves a glare on glass and plastic lenses. Also ,the chrome rails that the laser moves along need to be cleaned and lubed with liquid silicone. This method clears read problems most of the time. That will do.
I had the same problem with mine. it would play the ps2 games just fine but when i put a DVD in, it would click and keep saying reading disc.. i took it apart and gently cleaned the lense with a qtip and now it works fine
PS2 Disc Read Error FAQ - DRE Dealing with PlayStation 2 disc read errors: Page 3 try these my ps2 also fell over and i had this problem, you probably knocked the laser loose. it is a good sign tho that its reading the cleaning disc. this is really simple to do although it will void ur warranty if you do!!!!! please be sure because once you cut the seal thats all she wrote. feel free to email me should you need further assistance:) firstname.lastname@example.org melissa gilbert
hello try cleaning disc and lense..if disc has scratches .ones that go straight across disc are not to bad but if they follow disc in a circle ,lens will follow scratch as it is reading.when cleaning disc use a cleaner as any thing else will scratch..also try another game to see if your lens is okay .they can fail for no reason.
I would try cleaning your Playstation games, Check and make sure that the games your trying to play are not cracked in anyway. Also, if you have your system standing vertically lay it down horizontally. Many times after you've closed the disk in it lens to far away from the lens.
does it still read the disk you was playing or not if it dont then you could buy a lense cleaner put this into you ps2 and then after it has cleaned the lense try your games again you can buy these really cheap and they are just a disk with little brushes onn that cleans the lense in anything that takes disks if this dont solve the problem and the ps2 dont play any disk at all then the laser will need replacing you can replace it yourself but it will need to be recalibrated witch is something a pro must do as not doing this will stop it reading any disk but you only get this prob if you buy new laser you can get second hand ones but you never no if they are working or not hope this is some help to you
