    HT -X40 unknown disc

  • lee812 Dec 27, 2008

Mine is one year old. It was in the shop at 2 months after going completely dead. DVD's started pixellating and freezing the last couple of weeks. Cleaning does nothing. Now, I have the same problem with "unknown disc". My warranty expired 2 weeks ago.

This seems to be due to dust and the disc type cleaner doesn't seem to get it. You could take it to a shop and have it cleaned. I did it myself. I unplugged unit and cleaned the whole outside with a slightly damp cloth. Removed 2 screws in front and 3 in back and slid top of case towards back to open. Don't touch transistors or capacitors even with unit unplugged. Sometimes they store a charge.
I cleaned inside by carefully dusting with a small paintbrush while blowing dust out. I then carefully plugged unit in (don't touch anything inside!!) and pushed eject to open the disc tray. Looking into disc mechanism from the rear, underneath the white plastic center washer, you can see the laser head, a piece of glass about 1/4 inch round. It rides on springs. Close the tray and open it again. (You have about a minute before it automatically closes so time your cleaning to not get caught.) Very gently and carefully clean the laser head with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol. Put top back on, putting front down in first and then lowering the back and making sure that the copper contact in the front of the unit goes under the lid and replace the screws.
Mine is working like new now. Hope this helps somebody.

My RCA RTD317 has problems recognizing most DVD movie disks. It will play some disks most of the time and all audio disks, so I figure the lasers are working. What could be the problem?

If you've tried cleaning the Laser with a Lens Cleaner Disk or directly with Lens Cleaner Fluid and a QTip without any improvement then the Laser is Failing.

It takes less power to read some DVDs than others and a lot less power to read an Audio CD. The Laser will continue to deteriorate until it won't play anything.

I put a dvd in but the system is not reading it. i've tried other dvds and tried all 5 disc changers, but my system is still not reading any dvds. what is wrong?

Hi, what makes the DVD not to be able to read the inserted DVD's is because the lens of the player is too weak to spin the dvd plate to play.

You will need to use a DVD Lens cleaner to clean up the lens inside the player to clean up dirt disturbing it from not playing any DVD cd.

If after cleaning the Lens and still does not play, you will need to replace the Lens..

Have a nice day..

No DVD is playing and says disc error all times. The same DVD plays on my computer. I have tried many DVDs and the same error everytime

Hello,

how long have you been using this player? The problem should be from the lens (laser).

The lens is weak and that's why it cannot read/load DVD's. The weak lens is also what's making it say disc error.

Get a lens cleaner and use it to clean the lens, but if the lens still does the same thing even after using the lens cleaner, then it means you would have to change the whole lens completely to a brand new one.

By so doing your player would play all DVD's with no problem at all.

Good luck.

Bose lifestyles v28 plays dvds in black and white

Check your video output settings in the menu. If you are using a composite video output and do not have the system sut up for it, you will get a B&W picture. Check your menu settings.

How to hook up a dvd recorder with HTS6500/37?

Suddenly had this problem. My Phillips is hooked up to TV and to Cable Box. When I inserted a DVD it would return a "no disc" but it would read and play CDs. After a call to Phillips...who said that they had no idea what was going on and I should take it in for service...it was 4 months out of warranty. Repair company said it was not worth the repair costs ($200) so I should try cleaning the lens with a lens cleaning disc. I bought a Maxell. It has a set of little brushes on the bottom of the disc. I inserted it and played track 2 for 20 seconds as instructed and voila! It began reading the DVDs again. I was only out the $10 for the disc cleaner. If you have this problem, try the disc cleaner first as it might be the fix.
