Question about Emerson MW8985W Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Not heating up

Actually, my microwave is model #MW8997B. It is not heating up. When the cooking time is entered and
Start is pushed, the vegetable light and one of the other auto cook lights come on. (Sorry, I am not at the same location as the micro right now.) It responds as if it is cooking but it is not.

Typically, no heating of food, indicates a bad Magnetron (tube) or associated components. The oven can be repaired. Magnetrons are not hard to replace and can be ordered online through MCM electronics www.mcmelectronics .

However, due to the dangers of high-voltage within the unit, I would recommend taking the unit to a repair center.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.

Good Luck,

- Jim

Is it true that the use of microwave ovens destory the neutriunts in the food or water that is reheated in them?

According to a recent 'Ask Umbra' column on Grist, there are three factors affecting nutrient loss when you cook vegetables: temperature, time, and water. "Nutrients tend to be both heat-intolerant and water-soluble," the article says, which means that any method that requires a) cooking at a high temperature for a long time, and b) uses a lot of water will result in the greatest nutrient loss. (So by this measure, boiling vegetables is likely the worst offender.) It goes without saying then that cooking at a lower temperature for a shorteramount of time and with less water would result in the least amount of nutrients lost, and that's what the microwave accomplishes. So where did this idea originate in the first place? According to Grist, in 2003 a study from Spain claimed that steaming broccoli in the microwave caused it to lose 97 percent of its antioxidants, while stovetop cooking only resulted in an 11 percent loss. But critics say the study used more water than would ever be necessary in a microwave, and thus the results were flawed.Basically, water, not the microwave, is the most important factor when cooking vegetables, according to Grist. The less water, the better:Steaming, for instance, is a fairly good option because the veggies have less contact with water. Even better: Cook your veggies in a stew or soup, and you'll be able to slurp those escapee nutrients up. Stovetop stir-frying or saut?ing is also a good choice, assuming you don't go crazy with the oil. Baking and roasting are yummy, but don't forget that long exposures to heat will zap some of the nutrients. Of course, other arguments against microwaves have to do with magnetrons and radiation levels, etc., which is a whole other topic. But as far as nutrient loss goes, if microwaving is your preferred choice for cooking vegetables, than cook on. Just watch the amount of water you use!

Kenmore elite microwave

Was it just the exhaust fan that came on? If so this is normal when cooking on the stove for long period of time without the fan running. The heat builds up under the microwave and eventually activates the fan.

Sounds like the inverter (power supply for cooking) or the magnatron which does the work----neither are cheap parts.

My microwave GE model # JVM1440WH04 spacemaker has no heat coming out of it. My husband heated microwave lasagna in it last, everything works except for the heat, any solutions?

Push the microwave door tightly closed. The computer will not start cooking until the door is closed for safety reasons. Some models of microwave will give a warning on the screen if the door is open.
2

Ensure you have programmed a heat setting, entered a cooking time and pressed the "Start" button on the microwave's keypad. Check that the microwave is not set to "Defrost" mode.
3

Unplug the microwave and wait for one minute. This measure will reset the microwave's internal computer if it has frozen or scrambled. Plug the microwave back in and try again.
4

Ensure the keypad lock mode is inactive. Most microwave ovens have a lockout feature that prevents children from starting the microwave while unsupervised. Lockout mode is usually deactivated by holding down the button that bears a padlock symbol

Last year i bought microwave model no:black & decker from dubai. but my family members does not know to use all touch buttons. once my daughter tried to prepare fry some vegetable...

It is important that you attend a class on microwave cooking as it is important that during the process of microwave cooking it is the conduction in the food -- the molecules are agitated with microwave energy to heat up individually as the vessel does not heat.-
So the TIME and the POWER SET ON THE MICROWAVE is very critical which must be learned.
Start by keeping a glass/cup of water and choosing 1 minute for warming . Now watch and advance the time as you notice the heat building up.

My mother just bought an Emerson MW8119 Microwave and can't figure out how to only set say 15 seconds cook time. Is it possible?

Hi! I just purchased the same microwave, and came online to find the solution. I was then able to find the correct answer to this problem. On this model, Emerson does not put a "time cook" button for odd cook times such as 15 seconds. Instead, they have you push the "Power Button" prior to setting the cook time.

If you want to cook on full power, press the power button once, and then enter your cooking time and press start. If you want to cook on 50% power or 30% power or something like that, push the "Power Button" several times until the appropriate power level is displayed, then enter the cook time and press start.

The reason that it starts up right away when *********** pushes the 1 button is because Emerson has the quick cooking feature for 1 minute through 6 minutes. You only have to push the number once to get the 1 minute cook time or anywhere through 6 minutes respectively.

Hope this helps!
