Question about Samsung HPN5039 50 in. Plasma HDTV

Plasma went black. Power not interrupted.

Hello! My Samsung HPN5039 worked without problems over 4 years. Then the plasma was on and we left it alone for about an hour. When we came back it was black. No picture, no message, nothing. We checked power. OK. You can still change the LED status from OFF to ON and back with the remote control but the plasma is still black, like it's turned off. No one had access to the plasma and we checked everything that could cause the problem. On Samsung webpage we learnt it could be power supply failure or screen circuitry failure. What's your advice, gentlemen? Is it an easy fix or should we start to look for something new? Thank you so much for your time and we'll be looking forward hearing from you! Vladi The plasma also never showed any sign of deterioration or possible problems.

I have a HP-T4254 50" plasma tv. It's only two months old. I was hooking up my DVD player and all of the sudden the DVD player made a click, and a tiny puff of smoke came out of it, then the Plasma tv died. It went blank and then black and when I try to turn it on or off, I can'.t. It blinks the blue LED light off and on and will keep turning itself off and on if I leave it plugged in. I don't know anything about tv's really, but is it something circuit related, or bulb? I hope I didn't blow anything. Is there some sort of quick solution to repair it such as a code  I can press or reset or something like that? It will take almost a full week to get a repair guy out. Thanks SO much

I have the same problem. Does anyone know where I can get the schematics or have a picture of the power board so I can see which capacators I need to change? Thanks

Thanks for the feedback. Does anyone have a copy or know where I can get a copy of the schematics so that I can troubleshoot this issue myself?

Vladislav fixed his TV already by replacing some defective capacitors in the power supply.
The locations of the defective capacitors are C523 and C524. The value is 0.22uF/400VDC or can use 0.22uF/600VDC Polyester coated.
Good Luck.

This a great solution and fix and spot on. The C523 and C524 capacitors were open circuited hence not able to couple the voltage from the hot side to the cold side. I was missing the Vs = 88V which showed something like 18V.

Replaced the two caps. purchased form RadioShack off eBay @ 1.69 a pc and replaced it on the main SMPS board and voila .... TV picture is back. Just finished assembling the back panel and put this back on the wall mount. One happy family! Special thanks to Vladislav for posting the fix. Oh and btw I also changes the main Electrolytics on the SMPS and the X and Y buffer boards as they were bloated and about to become "bad caps", so got these from Digi-Key nice Rubycon ones for $55 set of 16 caps. So for a total of $58.38 my TV may live another 10 years, it;s a 2003 model, so exactly 10 years old.

Man, I love the internet! My seven year old HPN5039 finally died last week, and I could tell from the lack of high-pitched whine that the high voltage power supply had failed. Found this thread and ordered some new caps from DigiKey. Put 'em in this morning and the unit is working like a champ again. Thanks, guys, for sharing this knowledge!!!

I just bought mine on eBay @ Radioshack for $1.69 ea with free shipping. Part number MLR224K630, priced same as MLR224K400, higher voltage in same form factor is always better.

I can confirm Vladislav/ Jaime867's repair... Had the same problem on mine. Replaced the same two capacitors and bingo back in action.

I think the issue is that the capactitors sit between two heat sinks and if the display is flush mounted to the wall there is poor ventilation in there. I'm going to get a better mount and hopefully this doesn't happen again.

Cheers and thanks for the great fix!!! Only $4 bucks!

Did your capacitors show signs of being faulty? Were they domed or split? Or did you just change them? The reason I ask is I.have the same problem, but no sign of capacitors bad.

  • Jonathan Watkins Mar 26, 2012

The capacitors were split open, so it was pretty clear that they needed to be replaced. You could always through a volt meter on the capacitors to see if you're getting current through them.. or just take the chance and replace them, parts were <$5 and if you have any basic soldering skills it should be a cinch. Good luck... 4 years later after replacing those capacitors my plasma is still going strong

Have the same problem, the same model HPN5039.
Found Screen power supply voltage falure on VS, VSINC and VSS.
Do not have schematics to troubleshoot further.
If I find schematics would be able to locate the problem and fix.

Our Samsung HPN5039x Plasma TV isn't turning on: when we press the power button, the red power light flashes then turns off. What do we do?

Hello, It sounds like you have a defective power supply. Typically, +5 volt stby is present if the TV switches on with front indicator light. On the power supply, connector 802 pin 4 is the on command from the pcb main to switch the p.supply on. If this signal is present but still no VS,VA,VE panel voltages are missing, the p. supply is bad. Good luck!

Samsung hpn5039 worked for 6 years, now VERY dim. Thoughts? Can still see picture, barely.

The back plane lamps, and or the power lamp power supplies are failing. When considering 6 years of use, most likely both the lamps and the lamp supplies much be changed.
In many of these sets the back plane lamps are not replaceable. You will have to call the service rep in your area to find out if your set is serviceable.
From experience with these sets, after about 2 to 3 years proprietary parts become very difficult to have.

I have a Samsung plasma hpn5039, and i was watching tv and something started burning on the back, and the image went out. Does anybody know what that may be?

Two things,
1st -- power board problem
2nd -- Y- Main Board problem

If you are familiar with TV,
Open the back panel first then check the fuse on power & Y-main
Board.
It had problem that the board's which disconnected fuse on.
