The black ink cartridge showed empty. I opened the cover and installed a new one. The display on the printer said "Please press enter to align cartridges." I pressed enter, it tries to print a page, then kicks it out blank and says: "Paper mismatch, Try changing the paper type or paper in tray and then press enter." Problem is, it will NOT let me access Options (it beeps when I press that button) in order to tell it again that the paper type is premium inkjet. It will not let me press the Copy, Scan or Fax buttons (it beeps). All I can do with it is print a document off the computer, and the print colors are all wrong. How can I get it off this loop it is caught in? I have tried powering it down and unplugging it, and reloaded software. Didn't help. HELP!

If the message "NO CARTRIDGE" remains on the LCD after you have installed the ink cartridge(s), it is possible another ink cartridge is empty and needs to be replaced or one or more of the cartridges are not installed properly. Complete the following steps:
Unplug the machine from the AC power outlet, wait approximately 10 seconds and then plug it back in.
1a. If the display continues to show NO CARTRIDGE, verify the cartridges are installed properly by uninstalling and reinstalling all four ink cartridges. Follow Steps 2a through 2f.
1b. If "INK EMPTY XXXXX" (Xs = color, i.e. INK EMPTY CYAN) is displayed on the LCD, the specified ink cartridge is empty and needs to be replaced. Follow Steps 2a through 2f.
To resolve an INK EMPTY message or to confirm the ink cartridges are installed properly, complete the following steps:
2a. Open the ink cartridge cover. Pull the lock release lever(s) down and take out the ink cartridge(s). While you have the ink cartridge(s) out of the machine, verify the cartridge(s) are genuine Brother supplies with the Brother logo embossed into the side of cartridge.
2b. Reinstall the ink cartridge(s). Lift and push the lock release lever(s) until it clicks into place and close the ink cartridge cover.
2c. The LCD may then display:
Did you change xxxxxx? Yes No.
for the color(s) that was replaced. If this message appears, BE SURE to follow the instructions on the LCD to correctly select Yes or No. Select Yes if you installed a new cartridge(s) to automatically reset the ink dot counter for that color. Select No if you did not install a NEW ink cartridge(s).
2d. After all the correct selections are made, the machine will then enter a cleaning cycle.
2e.If the display again shows INK EMPTY XXXX, go back to Step 2 and follow the instructions to install a NEW ink cartridge.
2f.If the machine did not enter a cleaning cycle and the display continues to show NO CARTRIDGE after reinstalling new genuine Brother ink cartridges, your machine may require service.
If your computer is not recognizing the printer you should uninstall and reload the drivers. You might consider downloading a new driver for your operating system from this site:

NOTICE: The ink cartridges are all the way to one end. If the X4270 is plugged in, the cartridge carrier is stuck and doesn’t move. After further investigation a noticeable small black plastic lever is preventing the ink cartridges from moving. Photo below shows lever up and down (cartridges already moved in image below).

8. Push lever down clockwise so it is flush with plastic wall. Refer to image on right in Figure 6.
9. Lift the front cover open (if not already open) and plug in the X4270. Cartridges should move to center as if preparing for replacement.
10. Unplug the X4270 and remove power supply.
11. Remove bottom assembly carefully.
Figure 8 - Displays bottom assembly with lever and spring Note: The cause of this problem is the spring slides out of place over time, probably because of ink shed on one end of its loop and loop attachment.

12. Place spring in loop attachment and use hot tip of heated tool to melt top of loop attachment to prevent further errors. Melt top of loop attachment similar of that to a mushroom top.

When one or more ink cartridges are empty, for example, Black, the LCD
shows “Ink Empty Black” and “Open Cover.” Close the printer’s document
support and the document tray.
Lift the top cover to the open position until it locks securely into place.
Pull the ink cartridge hook toward the front of the printer and remove
the color ink cartridge displayed on the LCD. Place the cartridge in a
plastic bag as it may still contain some residual ink and may leak.
Open the new ink cartridge bag for the color shown on the LCD and
remove the new ink cartridge. The cartridge cover may come off when you
open the bag. This is not uncommon and will not damage the cartridge.
Each color has its own correct position that is clearly labeled and
color coded inside the printer. Keep the ink cartridge in an upright
position when you insert it into slot. It will only fit in the correct
direction. Press down on the ink cartridge until the hook snaps over

the LCD, the LCD may ask you to verify that the replacement cartridge
was brand new one. Example: “Did You Change Black? 1.Yes 2.No.” For
each new cartridge you installed, press 1 on the dial pad to
automatically reset the ink dot counter for that color. If the ink
cartridge you installed is not a brand-new one, select 2.
