Whirlpool gold refridgerator light not working and is making funny noise

The light is out, on fridge side not freezer, makes wierd noise when you open fridge, but is keeping food cold, and the tempeture gadges arent lighting up

Interesting, might light on the refrigerator side went out too. There touchy in that if I put the bulb in all the way it will knock the temperature control lights out too. I've discovered the 2 bulbs behind the second crisper in my Whirlpool conquest were blown, replaced them and still none of the 3 refrigerator lights comes back on. Still looking for solutions.

Whirlpool Gold side by side (GS6SHEXNB00). Came home to the same symptoms: opened the refrigerator door, one noisy flickering lightbulb (other two burned out). No display on temperature control until I unscrewed the flickering lightbulb. Sound goes away when lightbulb removed (assume voltage issues causing noise in bulb)?

Refrigerator cooling still seems fine. Freezer still working properly, cooling is fine, icemaker is working, lights are okay.

Will be contacting service company for solution.

I have the same problem. The freezer light is on, the refrigerator lights and display are off. I took of the module only to find the bulb is still good. I purchased a book on-line but it is a generic whirlpool book and does not cover this area.

I have same problem with my fridge. Please post if you find that it is the control board.

  • Anonymous Apr 13, 2008

Came across the same problem. Went to open the fridge and the light was outonly on th e fridge side not the freezer side, it wasl also making a clicking noise. so I pulled the fridge away from the wall and listened. Then pulled off the bottom cover and traced the sound to the circuit board. One of the little black things on there was clicking so I have come to the conclusion that it would probably need to be replaced. I priced the board at $118 and now I'm shopping for a lower price and getting input from other people with the same problem.

I have the same problem. The freezer side is working properly and the refrigerator side is cooling but the lights on the control box and the refrigerator door lights no longer work.

  • Anonymous Apr 22, 2008

Our refrigerator also started having this same problem yesterday. Light doesn't work, and there's a clicking sound towards the bottom of the unit. Also, the light bulb is fine, and appears to flicker very lightly with each pulse that you can hear.

    Is Whirlpool covering this problem?

  • jecha May 23, 2008

Same problem, control light & top light don't work, but still cooling.

  • Anonymous Sep 11, 2008

same problem! whirlpool should at least pay for a portion of the cost to repair it.

    I have the same problem.

  • Anonymous Nov 06, 2008

tech says i need a new circuit board. this will fix the light problem and the freezer leaking water. it is only three years old. we are disappointed.

  • haxczar Nov 11, 2008

Exact same problem, open the fridge and get buzing with flickering lights. playing with bulbs got one or 2 but not all three working - but only flickering, buzzing sounded to me a lot like arcing, also nasty plastic smell like brand-new fridge plastic smell but much stronger indicated something hot. After opening and closing the door a few times trying to find the problem buzzing stopped but so did compressor... Freezer lights still worked, but all cooling stopped; luckily we have an old fridge / spare freezer so we could transfer almost all of our food to save it. pretty certain this is shorted main control panel. Fridge less than 3 years old - very disappointing

Same problem about 1 year after fridge was purchase. Now (2 years later) the board went again.

Whirlpool side by side refrigerator light will not work. the lights in the freezer side work. ensured new light bulb works, took out door switch and it seems good, have power to switch what is left? There is a irratic clicking sound coming from the lower right bottom of the fridge only when the fridge side is opened. The light does not come on and the LEDs on the controls do not light up either. The clicking goes away when the door switch is pressed. The freezer side light works fine. The fridge/freezer are cooling fine. Sounds like a bad relay???? Any help would be great!
    Thanks!

Same problem. Whirlpool products are garbage. I have six Whirlpool appliances that are all less than five years old. Of the six appliances, I have had issues with five of them. If you call Whirlpool you will get no joy, their staff is surly and rude. What a disappointment.

you may have a short in the display board dissconnect the wires in the disaplay see if the lights work and vice versa

  • Larry Gold Jun 27, 2013

It is the main board found at the back of the fridge on the left side when looking from behind or right side when looking from the front. it is in a cream coloured box attached to lower side at back. replace it and should solve the problem.

Had the identical symptoms with my Whirlpool Gold GS6SHEXNB00 side-by-side refrigerator. Had a technician come on site, indicated it was the "circuit board/ timer" (Whirlpool part # 1394052). Board is accessible from behind fridge (lower left side in a white plastic housing to left of compressor).

Swapped the board out (noticed a scorched circuit on the old circuit board). Lightbulbs now work, temperature readouts also good to go.

Mine started doing the same thing this the day before yesterday. The lightbulb on the fridge side went out and it started making the noise everytime we open it. It was purchased in 2004 (5/04 manufacture date) model # GD5RHAXNT00 and is a Whirlpool Gold. Had to have the ice maker replaced in March. (it went out last year)

Does this qualify as normal "wear and tear?" I've had my conquest gold for less than 4 years and the board's gone out and we have a repair man at our house that whirlpool recommended quoting us over $300 to repair it! unreal...i could imagine if it was something that the consumer used every day but a RELAY BOARD?! what's the life expectancy on a RELAY BOARD for whirlpool? less than 4 years? chances are i won't be purchasing whirlpool anymore! anyone have any ideas?

Your issue sounds the same as mine. I have a Whirlpool Gold side-by-side. The fridge lights don't work.
Appliance Repair guy came today - after testing everything came to the conclusion it's the electric "computer board" that controls everything. Tech says once replaced, everything will be fine.

Hello:
Had this same problem - started last night. I found about 60 postings on diychatroom.com about the same problem. What seems to be happening is that the control circuit board gets a trace blown due to a bulb burning out. This is a faulty design, and whirlpool should be paying for the replacement. The control board is around $110.

It is the main board which is located at the back... on the left if looking from behind the fridge freezer. It is at the bottom of the fridge side screwed to the side in a cream plastic cover. Replace it and the problem should go away.

If you pull out the refrig, screwed to the cabinet, along side the compressor is a circuit board inside a white housing, theres beena short on that board and will need replacing.

Buy this board and change it yourself or get help SAFETY FIRST unplug the REFRIDGERATOR before working with any boards or electrical!!!

It is located in the back of your fridge on the bottom left side when facing the back of the fridge. Unscrew the white box, open the box, remove the board connector and board. (There is a clip that pushes to one side). Insert the new board. Pluhg in the fridge. Enjoy the light and temp LEDs.

BTW I offered 29.99 and it was accepted.

Have a whirlpool side by side american fridge freezer,,

If the fan in the freezer is working.
You can hear this fan running when you open the freezer. Then I think the noise you hear is the fan hitting an ice build up.

This is a failure of the defrost system.

Whirlpool gold refridgerator light not working and is making funny noise

I had the same problem. Model Number GS5SHAXNL00 Light wouldn't work on the fridge side and the led's wouldn't light up. Ended up being a blown circuit path on the control board.

Check the picture.f21d241.jpg

All I did was soder a wire between the 2 points that path was connecting and *BINGO* the lights are back on!

657b6f4.jpg

Hope this helps someone. To find the burned out spot just look for a little black smudge on the white plastic case when you remove the board.
