The CD may be turned 'off' in the BIOS listing which you can view on boot-up by usually holding down the F2 key. Sometimes BIOS setting may change for no good reason, so lookout for this and make sure your motherboard battery is providing enough power. Install a new battery if not sure.

Firstly will the CD rom open when you press the button. Is the 4 pin power cable attached to the device inside the case. Old computers have a failing CD before any other part fails usually. If the power and the cables are securely connected then maybe it is just faulty and needs replacing.

Not seeing new hard disk or reading XP cd-rom

It can use any 31/2" IDE hard drive. 30 Gb should be OK
If the BIOS cannot detect the hard drive or the CD drive then the drives maybe faulty or the disk controller in the computer is faulty.

Originally a GX150 but board died and I installed a GX240 board and replaced the connecting cable for the front panel controls (switch etc). Seems to work fine except that it intermittently loses the...

Your problem has nothing to do with the front panel connections. Maybe it's a cd rom's problem, ATA cable problem or bios settings problem. First of all make sure that your drive is set up correctly as primary or slave at the channel. Some motherboards have problems when the cd rom is master and the hard disk is slave. If the master - slave is correct, check the bios settings and, if the problem exists, avoid AUTO settings; change the proper channel at cd/dvd rom.
In case of a problem post me back your drives configuration too (hard disks and cd/dvd rom).

Check the BIOS to make sure that the CD rom is the first boot devices in the bootup sequence, also make sure that the cd rom does show up in the BIOS.
Make sure that the CD Rom itself is good or the boot cd you are using is good, try it on other PC.

Ok, well i wiped the hard drive and i need to reinstall **** windows... but i went into the boot sequence to select the cd rom to read the windows disk but it says that no boot device available what to do?...

Try restarting the computer, then tap F2 to go into the setup. In the boot menu, see if cdrom is the first boot device listed. If it's not, use the arrow keys to move it to the first boot device. Save that setting and exit, then try to boot from disk.
