Question about Panasonic PT-51HX40 51" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

PT51HX40B so i replaced the STK's with NTE7178, the picture is great when I first turn the set on, but after about 5 mintues it's as if the convergence, (especially red) wants to go bad again. what would you suggest, bad solder joint, other bad components, bad convergence assy? Help and thanks.....

thanks, i'll give that a shot, i'm very confident i applied enough heat compound. thnx again..

didn't work, after about 45 mins with fan on chassis the convergence goes all bullocks. what's this with pressing 7 and hold after convergence is set?

I would suggest to check the solder joints again and also nearby the STKs area, check the low values resistors solder joints as well.
It looks like the ICs are overheating.
Did you apply enough thermal compound before installing the ICs?
Try placing a fan close enough to the ICs, just to see if overheating is an issue.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the feeback and rating.

If the TV now works for 45 minutes instead of 5, it means that the overheating is an issue.

You have used the 3 amps ICs, It is safe to use the ones that can handle more current to avoid the overheating.

    Check HERE.

I would not say you will break traces or pads if you know and how to do it.

Have you checked the rest of the solder joints in the nearby area?

Pay attention to the low value resistors as well, since they get hot and that might affect the solder joints as well.

The 6 amp version should work better than the 3 amp, but you still need to check for dry solder joints before changing the ICs for a higher current.

five blinks on this unit indicates a weak or out crt tube you can try opening the unit and very gently tapping the bottom of the glass part of the tube to see if you can clear some of the carbon build up from the tube only a temporary fix. be very careful not to break the tube

John, Hitachi site is down at the moment, if you remove the clips on the front of the IC`s you will see the numbers of the convergence ic`s, and yes they are a pain to get out, they are probably stk 392-110`s if they are the originals, you`ll have to un-solder 36 pins total to get them out, check for burnt resistors in the general area of the ic`s and replace any that are burnt before turning the set on,be sure to order a tube of "heat sink compound" to apply to the back of the new IC`s, once on the set will probably still look poor, this is normal, run the set for minimum of 15 minutes then push the " magic focus button " inside the front door panel, after it has finished running magic focus it should look great, video-tek

JVC AV-48WP30 will not give a picture

Replace the convergence IC`s again using original Sanyo chips (STK 392-110 or STK 392-180). Make sure to use plenty of heat sink compound. Coat the entire back side of the chips. Also look to see if any of the low ohm resistors are burned. A shorted chip will cause the thumping sound and the set will shutdown. I am guessing that you used generic IC`s as a replacement. They are cheap and the leggs fall off when you apply too much heat during soldering. Dont wory about the CRT driver or the deflection board, they are probably fine.
