Question about GE Hotpoint Top-Freezer Refrigerator

Cooling problem with a ge top freezer refrigerator

Our GE refrigerator is not cooling anymore. Last week my husband tried to clean out all the vents etc. with a vaccuum that solved it for a few days then yesterday I woke up to soft frozen waffles and ice cream soup. The refrigerator part slowly got warmer and warmer too. Is there any hope for saving it?

you will need to post your model number if it is a PSS model your control board is most likely bad

I have one that did the same. The coil in the back of the freezer was frosting up because it wasn't defrosting like it was supposed to. I noticed that the thermostat looked damaged so I ordered a new one from sears parts direct which by the way will show a diagram of the model you have. I just installed it last night so I will post how it comes out. This morning the freezer has a burnt smell but I am hoping its from the defrost not working for a while!

I have a GE side by side refrigerator, model GSL85JFPHBS. It sstopped working altogether last month. first the refrigerator stopped working, two day later the freezer part stopped working. I had someone...

I think you meant you have a GSL25JFPHBS (not 85).
It sounds like you have a defrost problem. If your refrig. was off for some time, like a day or more, or it was manually defrosted, it would work for about 2 weeks before the problem would re-occuer. This is caused by a build up of frost on the cooling coils, preventing air flow over them. Un-load the freezer and remove shelves and the back wall inside the freezer. Melt the frost with a hair blower, and replace the defrost heater (part # WR51X10055) and for good measure, replace the defrost thermistor (part # WR55X10025) located at the top of the cooling coils.

My refrigerator stopped cooling and my freezer stopped freezing but the freezer is still cooling

Same thing with our GE Eterna Series - off and on for the last two weeks. Took back panel off, looked around, vacuumed dust build up off of the fan blades, etc.; everything worked fine for five good days. Then frig went out stopped cooling. Off and on for the last week. Unplugging it works for a day then back to not freezing and or colling.

GE not cooling properly

If you have changed temp and adjusted vents, then either your temp sensor may be faulty or thermostat itself may be faulty. Check compressor to make sure it is pumping and there is no freon leaks.
