Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

Loss of Connectivity

Just bought a new Sony Vaio Laptop and set up a wireless network at home. The WRT54G is hard wired to a an old desktop while the laptop is connected wireless. The laptop loses connection to the router especially after it is taken out of range (out of the house), the router does not recognize it. We have to re-cycle the router to get the signal strength back up. The laptop then looks like is trying to set up a second connection (can see a 2nd identically named laptop)
Any ideas? Thanks

The Vaio has Vista Home loaded. I will check if the wireless icon is on the system tray. Will also double check the router admin page. Thanks

If you are using XP on the Vaio see if this fixes the situation
Right Click on the XP Wireless Icon in the System Tray and
    click on Repair

If this fails it is your router if it succeeds it is most likely your computer

If it is your router goto the router admin page and change client
lease time to a much smaller number

Unless it was installed by the big box retailer when they "optimized" the laptop. I did not install any additional Linksys software on the laptop. Let me double check to see how it is connecting, if I am not mistaken it is using Windows built in wireless management. (it also looks like there was some preloaded Sony software to allow it to be used in a wireless environment) I am wondering if both are trying to connect at the same time?

Libog1 - did you install any additional wireless software to connect to the router (Linksys software) or are you just allowing Vista to connect directly using Windows' built-in wireless management?

On your desktop, open your browser and navigate to http://192.168.1.1 . If it asks you for username and password, enter admin in both fields. You should then be in the Linksys setup application. Can you get to that point?

Linksys WRT54G can't connect 3rd wireless computer

log into the WRT54G wireless router and ensure that you do not have it set up for only handing out 4 IP addresses also check the laptop to see if it is set to have a DHCP or static IP address, if it has a static IP and your network is dynamic then this is why it wont connect.

if this resolves your issue and you are happy with the answer please grade me accordingly.

thanks

Network has suddenly dissapeered

This is just a problem with the wireless settings of the router, you can try first to reset the router by pressing the reset button for 20 seconds while power is ON and then after that you should be able to find the default wireless name of the router which is linksys, after you reset the router just need to reconfigure it back...

Cant connect 2 laptops through linsky wrt54g is this possible

are you connecting the laptop hard wired or wirelessly?

for wired connection, just plug the ethernet cable from the router to the laptop and it should work fine.

for the wireless connection, check on the wireless network connection. for xp, click on start> control panel> network connections> right click wireless network connection> then click on view available wireless network> then select your network.. for secure wireless connection, type the security key then click connect. :-)
