Go video dvd recorder vhs combo vr3845 - won't read discs - says unknown disc

Hi, all of a sudden my go video dvd recorder/vhs combo won't read movies anymore. it says "unknown disc" and then ejects them.

these are not recorded movies. real movies bought or rented from netflix. i sent my last movie back to netflix thinking that there was a problem with the movie, but i just got 2 more and it won't read these either.

any ideas on how to fix this? thanks. mary

I have the same problem too, but in addition, I copied all my old VHS onto DVD, and the DVD's will only play in my GoVideo machine?

Did you ever find a solution?  I've cleaned mine a million times and still most dvd's won't play.  Even tried the hack to make it a multiregion machine (press set up on your remote, scroll down to the padlock and press 0000 on the remote) My problem is with mailed blockbuster DVD's.  80% won't play.  From what I gather, there is a firmware update (vr3845a.iso) that could possibly fix this, but since GoVideo is no more, I can't find it anywhere (not even on limewire or any other P2P).  Are Lite On DVD recorders the same?  If so, which Lite On model is the equivalent of  the GoVideo 3845?  Any help would be appreciated as I would love to watch my DVD's with my surround sound system instead of only in stereo from an old DVD player.  Are there any other combo units that have a composite out for both the DVD and VCR like the GoVideo?   New machines still don't seem to upconvert the VCR to composite or HDMI and require you to use RCA out, so what's the point in getting a combo unit when you still have to make 2 connections out to your tv?

FIRST UNPLUG THE UNIT FROM POWER !!!!! The problem is dirt/dust/****/crud/stuff on the tiny, little ***** laser lens. Remove the case screws ( 2 on each side, some in the back) with a correct size driver. The cover must be pulled open at the bottom, side to side a tiny bit ( use a hand on each side) to allow the cover to lift up at the rear, it must come up quite a bit as if it is hinged at the front and THEN pulled back out of the front panel. Set the cover to the side. The DVD reader/Burner is covered with a small black cover, it is held on with two TINY screws, STOP!!!! Get yourself the CORRECT size driver at Fry's or Radio Shack, DO NOT get cheap here!!! Remove the two screws and find the two plastic grip tabs, push them to release and lift the cover. There is the laser! It is a tiny blue lens about the same diameter as the tiny screws. find a very, very well washed CLEAN 100% cotton T-shirt. The softer the better, get 70% or higher rubbing alcohol, pull the fabric over the tip of the finger and wet with the alcohol. VERY GENTLY wipe the lens 4 to 5 wipes and the 3 wipes with a dry spot. That should clean the lens. USE NOTHING ELSE!!!!!! The lens tracks back and forth on two tiny bars. The stuff I use is WD-40 wet on a Q-tip swab. Go to a safe place to spray the WD-40 on the Q-tip. The lube should drip. With the Q-tip apply the lube to the tiny bars at the ponts of rider contacts and wipe the bars too. Put the top of the burner back> BE CAREFUL!! Use a magnet driver and then repower and try to read a known good dvd. You will have to do this more in the future, you understand, dist dirt etc in the air. Put the top back on. Enjoy.

When I insert a blank DVD+R to copy a VHS, It reads the disk, says "Unknown Disk" and ejects it. How do I record if I can't keep a disk in the machine?

some discs don't work in some recorders. I always use verbatim, ritek or tdk discs and have very few problems. if the recorder suddenly dislikes a batch of one brand, I'll use one of the others.

Make sure the device is plugged into the household power supply and is switched on if no indicator lights are illuminated on the control panel. Watch for any power-saving technology that can shut the recorder down when it's not being used. Try the "Power" button again.

Verify that the media you are using is compatible with the device. Most combos record to DVD-RAM/-R/-RW/+R/+RW Discs on the disc side. VHS cassettes can have erasure tabs, so check that the tab is still there if you can't record to the cassette. Watch out for copy-protection technology on either the tape or disc. Often it's indicated on the packaging. Copy protection is designed to stop illegal reproductions, so may block many recordings of copyrighted material.

Connect a television to the "Video Out," "S-Video Out" or "Component Video Out" jacks on the DVD-VCR combo if you can't see video from the combo playing on the television.

Forcibly eject a disc if it is stuck in the combo. Often, manufacturers will create a sequence of buttons to use that accomplishes this. On a Panasonic, you force the combo into "Standby" by pressing "Power" for 10 seconds. Then press and hold "Stop" and the "Channel Up" button together for five seconds, and the disc should eject.

RCA 8295n dvd-vcr combo starts recording from VHS tape to disk and then stops.

Is the VHS tape a store bought movie or show?

MacroVision and other copy protection systems are put into store bought tapes and discs of movies and shows, and are read by your recording equipment. Once it reads this, it stops recording.

Does the screen turn red before it stops? This is one of the indications that MacroVision is stopping you.

I have a Magnavox ZV427MG9. I follow all directions in manual for dubbing VHS home movies to DVD but when I try to play the DVD back there's nothing on them. What am I doing wrong?

Depending on the procedure you may be pressing the record button instead of the D.Dubbing or Dubbing button. When recording from VHS to DVD you must first, load the blank DVD and VHS home movies, then play the VHS movies, then PAUSE the VHS movie when you want to START recording... then the only the you have to do is pressing the D.Dubbing button or the Dubbing button. If your VHS tapes starts to play after the Dubbing button is pressed you have been successful in Dubbing.

Cannot do this on a combo unit. There is a chip that senses copy protection and prevents recording a copy-protected DVD to a VHS and vice-versa. Solution: Use an outboard DVD player or an outboard VHS VCR and try the recording with the video routed through a "stabilizer" box. The stabilizer (about $30 or less on Ebay) defeats the copy protection on MOST DVDs, but not all. It works with Netflix DVDs. Route the audio as usual. Audio is not protected.

Hello?????????! Where have you been living these last five years?? Under a rock in Podunk, Iowa?? Remember when VHS was duking it out with Betamax back in the 1980s? VHS eventually won in 1988. Now it is the 21st century and BlueRay and HD-DVD just concluded their war for supremacy of the new recording/viewing format.
In other words, your HD DVD will not play on your DVD machine. You can either stick with DVDs or buy a new machine. Read the paper; listen to talk radio, listen to a podcast; BE INFORMED.
