Question about Sony KP-65WS510 65" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

Convergence problem??? picture looks like a 3-d movie with out the glasses.. The red seems more out of wack then the blue or green...from what I've read on the web the ic's are bad called repair man said convergence amp was bad >>>>??? I have the same problem. Model KP-65WS510 Was perfect in every way yesterday. Today, turned on the set and have a contoured picture, with green lines streaming horizontally across the upper third of the screen. Colors are off vertically and convergence function moves a tiny bit and not enough to fix this very drastic off-set of colors. I would like to attempt to repair this myself? What would I need and where can I find the approved procedure/parts? Thanks for this excellent help forum!

You have a convergence problem. Here are some of the most common symptoms.

Screen looks 3D
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
Screen is bowed in but stationary.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

>>>Solution<<<<

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors.

Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kit for your exact model. The kit includes a photo instruction guide, original Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, etc. Everything you need to fix it yourself.

    CRT Fluid gets Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

    Solution #2

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

I would suggest replacing both convergence IC's and all the resistors that hold the Green convergence. You should have a service manual so that you can trace which IC and resistors holds the Green convergence. By the way you need to do a little bit of soldering as well..

Yeppers..those chips are soldered(more like welded) into the board, and usually runs you around 300 to 400 buckos..

it's micro circuitry soldering, which you'd need a special soldering set up for(the kind that sucks as it solders)..

My rca r52wm24 HD/TV monitior,is having ploblems with the picture, last night all of the suden the picture looks like a 3d movie with out the glasse, what is the problem

the problem is called convergence.this model was made with 2 options for convergence.first go into menu of tv,find convergence.if it has auto convergence activate it,IMPORTANT dont do any thing until its done(it will reach 100%,you can see it on the screen.the 2nd option is manual convergence,in that case you have to adjust the red onto the green then blue onto the green,DO NOT MOVE THE GREEN.both red/blue will move up and down, left and right.

Blue Halo - convergence issue with 43Hx70

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

Problem #2

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture

*Red/Orange looking picture

Convergence problem???

Check the resistors by the STK ic's, should be 2.2 ohms. Under the heat sink, also check the 1.8 Ohm 1W, fusible resistors found around the area as well.
Good Luck.

Sounds like the convergence ICs this is a common problem in all projection tv as the ICs have a lot of work projecting the correct alignment. You will need to replace both ICs at about 10.00 each. Also check the resistors right next to the ICs cause usually 1 or 2 of them will go open when the ICs give out.
