Engine stalls but only when idling in drive not

Radiator cooling fans not working? The ECM is protecting the engine by shutting it down.

How long since a tune-up? Have you checked the timing? How many miles on engine? How is your cylinder compression?
There isn't much load on engine in park or neutral. When you put it in gear, there is a load on the engine. With carbed engine 6--8 psi fuel pressure. Crub idle in drive, 575 rpms. With a high mileage engine, that idle speed may not work. Is there an idle screw on the carb, where you can up the idle to keep it from stalling, in gear? Of course if you do that, when you put it in park or neutral the idle is going to go high, I know it's a pain. If your engine is in poor shape, your probably going to have a tough time, getting it to run correctly. Just my opinion.

How does it idle in park , does it run ruff or smooth? Are any lights lit on the dash , check engine etc. ? Could have a partially plugged IAC air passage .idle air control (IAC) valve ! The engine computer uses the IAC to control idle , when under a load such as when put into gear the computer raises the idle ! It does this by allowing more air to by pass the closed throttle into the engine raising the idle ! If these air passages clog they restrict the air flow an cause a idle problem ! but starts?, (you lift off the s) ok it always starts.
when put in park, well gee is starts only in park and neutral.?
the engine stalls. try stating what engine does good and bad and when.
so it idles all day.?
but has no engine power.? when? in gear. in drive.?
if tuned up , is it, do the 60,000 mile list.
what engine, cars have many different engines.
we open the hood and its obvious, on line, nada. SSDD.

reasons. for stalling, if that is what it does, cant tell from above.
1: fuel starvation. weak fuel pump. or the 60k filter never ever changed.
2: got a MAF sensor on car, its dirty, or bad.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

you may be looking at a bad throttle position sensor

You need to have an OBII scan for faults. Any good shop or parts store can scan it for you give you list of faults/fixes. Once repaired then they can/will reset lights

Given your high guage temps of 210 degrees and high ambient temperature of 100 degrees, your engine's stalling can very likely be linked to either one of these three causes: 1) vapor lock; 2) percolation; or 3) PCV malfunction. mcdevito75 here, Sounds like the idle speed motor, Ford is known for these idle speed motors going bad, in the later stages the car races like crazy. have your repair shop check this idle speed motor and change it.

if it has over 40,000 miles on it change the drive belt and have the alternator tested and also make sure all of the vaccum lines are on and in place
