I have to open and close the dreamcast multiple times before it finally reads the game. The games are old and scratchy, but have been cleaned several times. How do I make it stop doing this?

This is probably the most ridiculous thread I've ever read in regards to the most common fault of the Sega Dreamcast. The issue is not with the laser - if it was unable to read the disc, it wouldn't read the disc. The issue is actually with the pins that connect to the motherboard. They corrode and burn out over time. This can be fixed by cleaning with a high percentage alcohol. Make sure you have unplugged and turned off the console for a couple of hours beforehand. And before you open it up, press the on button to check for any remaining power. Instructions are here http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/dreamcast-random-reset-and-common-fixes/
Looks like your Dreamcast can't read the game properly either due to damaged disc or the dreamcast GD rom is not working properly. try recalibrating the GD rom using this guide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTMSRfEqWAU
There can be 1 or 3 problems with this 1 The laser lens needs to be replaced 2 The motor that spins the disc needs replacing 3 The motor that drives the laser carriage needs replacing.
Seeing as the game hangs after the sequence and not after doing a specific thing then I would call it a reading error rather than a glitch.
All I can say is to check your discs for deep scratchs and smudges and to give the game disc a good cleaning.
Disc based game media commonly has this problem of hanging in very random areas and sometimes even odd artifacts, though that is usually rare.
Also some game shops have disc rebuffering services and can be worth it despite the cost.
Also a chance the Dreamcast's laser is malfunctioning, check other games for simular problems that are known for running fine. This problem is usually rare with good care however and shouldn't be the case.
I suggest cleaning and possibly getting the disc rebuffered if all else fails as this appears to be a common disc reading error.
First off, NEVER store a game console on top of a subwoofer. It is like a giant magnet, and electronic devices do not handle magnetics. I don't think i've ever heard of a VGA box, Sega brand or not, killing a console. Millions use aftermarket AV cables and adaptors on all consoles without problem. I think it likely died from being on top of the sub. Relocate it and you should be fine. Running it for a few hours isnt likely either unless you had the vents entirely blocked.
To the guest who's drive isnt spinning, I would say your drive motor has burnt out. This doesn't indicate a defect in Dreamcasts, per se, it just means bad luck or excessive dust which killed it. Either buy a different Dreamcast or see if you can find a drive replacement.
Hope this helps.
the lid switch is loose or the support holding it has broken off, try looking at the lid switch inside your dreamcast, and for guest: you might want to do the same thing
ok guys i have 4 dreamcasts the problem is people beat the crap out of em. try holding the lid partially closed with a weight on top it should read the disk and play good. the sensor that tells it there is a disk in there is probaly a little screwed up.
Also get a clean cue tip and some 91% rubbing alcohol and gently clean the lens on the laser and it sould work like new.
so get to the browser with the lid open all the way put a disk in and slowly close the lid at about 80 percent closed it should say reading disk put a weight on the lid to keep it where it is and try the game if it works your good.
permenent solution. remove modem and the 4 screws at the bottom of the dreamcast without a disk in there pull the top off. now look at the part of the lid that hits the little black flapper (it's on the top right of the main board) now tape or glue a small amount of anthing to the part of the lid that hits the switch about 4 mm thick of paper taped to it will push the switch further in and it should recognize disks better now and all will be well in the world e-mail me for pix if you want [email protected]
