No sound since installing xp

I installed windows xp on my gateway solo 2150 laptop and now I have no sound. The sound driver listed that doesn't make any sound is a unimodem half duplex audio device. Any idea how I can get sound on my laptop again?

hi, i just did the sound download and updated the driver, but as my previous sound driver was unimodem half duplex and this driver is creative sound blaster, i'm getting the message of (code 10) cannot be played. What do I do?

  • godswealth4u Apr 23, 2008

I had vista o/s on a dell inspiron 531s, I deleted vista and uploaded xp from a disk. After I did this I could not get any sound, I did a scan for drivers and the scan read that I had unimodem half-duplex audio device/microsoft/ 7/1/2001 /5.1.2535.0 But on my computer under sounds/audio devices it says that I have no device. So I am thinking that its not reading the device because of the drivers? Please help

Hi,
you could try downloading a Driver detector.
And it will state what Drivers are missing-unsopported-corrupt et,c. And possibly give you the Drivers file Name and recommend Where to Get It.

Gateway does not provides drivers for XP. Here is the link to an unofficial driver for XP. It is not from gateway but it should work. You may need to sign up and open the link back to download it.

Here is another website providing link to same driver, same as above, sign up search driver back and download.

Be careful that there are loads of ads in this kind of websites and downloading sometimes may be a bit tricky.

PS. If it works do not forget to give proper rating to this solution.

Download file and unzip all content in a folder called audiodriver. open control panel / printer and other hardware ... to get to device manager. when you have device list click on the device that is not working, it should have a quotation mark on top. Chose properties / update driver.

Then chose 'Install driver manually' instead of letting windows search automatically for a driver.

You should get a button that says 'have disk' at this point. press it and chose browse option. in browse select the folder audiodriver where you unpacked the driver and is done. In the explication file I gave before there may be some pictures.

SOURCE: no sound since installing xp

Unfortunately your best bet on your Inspriron 531s is to go back to Vista. According to Dell, this system was specifically setup to run Vista and, therefore, no XP drivers are guaranteed to work on this model. Most of the time for onboard devices, if they are not listed on the site, they are usually native to the operating system and do not require a driver download. Dell does, however, have some XP drivers for this model listed on their support site here

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WW1&osl=EN&catid=-1&impid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=INSP_DSKTP_D531S&hidos=WW1&hidlang=en

The only audio driver listed is for a Creative Labs X-Fi sound card and I am not sure that is what you have. Your best bet is to uninstall your sound card drivers, reboot, then install these. Good Luck

I have a gateway solo 2150

I just upgrade my laptop also. The fix seems to be this Driver Wdm4148 you can finf it here http://rapidshare.com/files/4436678/Wdm4148.zip.html You have to open Device Manager select your sound device it should have a ? since it's not working. Select update driver don't go through the windows update and select Install from a specific location. Now browse and find where you downloaded the file. I recommend the desktop Open it until you see the internal Wdm4148 and install. You'll have to do it twice for some reason but it works :)

Download and run everesthome from
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Once you open it and run the program
  1. open motherboard
  2. open chipset
  3. click on south bridge
The audio controller will be listed.
Google XP drivers for that controller

Sound not available on compac presario v3614AU

This usually occurs because of corrupted drivers .. you should completely uninstall the sound card driver, reboot and let windows detect the card and if it's not plug n play ... install the driver manually, not automatically.

Sounds like the cable is not securely connected to the motherboard.
I would doubt the OS is responsible for this problem.
Nice little machine, the service manual is available for download for free. Might give a shot at refastening the cable.
If you're not that enthusiastic about taking a laptop apart, possibly an external mouse?
Put XP back on. If you have enough memory, it runs just fine.
Good luck
