    1) What windows version are you running,

    2) Do you run anti virus & anti spyware software and keep them up to date.

    3) How much hard drive space do you have free.

Things you can do
1) defrag your hard drive
2) disable all programs that are not needed at start up,do this by...
got to start button then run ...type in the run box msconfig, go to start up tab,and select disable all, this will take the tick out of all the items that start when booting up,then put a tick back in your anti virus program ,any anti spy-ware, email client such as incredimail, then select apply, upon reboot you will get a message saying that you have been into msconfig ,put a tick in the box at the bottom left so it will not come up on subsequent boots.

3) run your anti virus & anti spy-ware, if you dont have them, download AVG antivirus & AVG antispyware they are free and good, you can download them at this site http://free.grisoft.com/

4) you may also have a bad stick of memory,so if one stick that is not in the first ram slot died, you will may be running on half your ram that would slow things up also.

5) if you have just upgraded to windows XP be aware that you will need at least 512 Mbs ram

i hope this will help you
good luck

To ansver your question would take alot of time and it is very complex. I'm not going to do that for free.

But I can suggest reinstalling windows.

I have had problems when starting from cold - the workstation dell Precission 670 starts to boot then it gets to the window screen for only a few seconds and the screen goes dark and the "B" & "C"...

B and C usually indicate a drive failure. if issue only occurs on COLD boot and successive boot attempts gain access to the OS, then the most likely issue is that the HDD is slow to come to operating speed, (Drive has to be at Approx 97% of rated rotation speed before is can successfully read) on drives where the spindle is slow to come to speed, a cold boot then successive warm reboot will often gain access to the HDD/OS
http://www.fixya.com/support/r4282412-find_no_post_diagnostic_information_dell
One problematic issue on diagnosing this is that you only have 1 opportunity to run diags (The cold boot) and get a reading on if the drive is failing to read (also because diags are generally slower to load, the drive may come up to speed before the diag actually runs)
If issue is problematic and getting worse, I'd replace the HDD

Your PC may take a long time booting up. But let it boot. Then follow the link below. And when the PC re boots, it will gallop. My laptop used to take more than 40 minutes to boot. Now it gallops like a new one.

Computer takes longer to boot up, plus is running very slow

1. To increase PC boot speed:
There must be too many programs automatically start when you boot your PC. To manage them, click Run, type in "msconfig", select "Boot", then you can disable unnecessary programs from that list.

2. To increase PC running speed:
* Adding RAM is the most effective method, but if the RAM is already at the maximum, then do the following.
* Run disk cleanup and defragmenter. But to be honest, the built-in Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter run quite slow and they will take you quite a long time, so I never use them. Third-party programs are better.
* Run registry optimizer software and defrag. No Windows built-in tools to do this. Search on google or refer to this free registry cleaner review.

My pc is super slow at startup. It takes a long time to boot when you first turn it on.

Start the PC, go to start menu-->run, then type "msconfig".
Look around at the boot and services tabs, and disable some software you know and could live without if it didn;t automatically load.
That should speed booting up. If not, and it is several months ago that you installed WIndows, try to reinstall it.
However, do backup all your data before you do that, everything on your Windows partition will be lost in reinstalling.

Very slow boot

Bruce, the Dell OptiPlex GX260 normally will be equipped with a PC133 DDR1 128MB RAM module. It is recommended that you upgrade to higher memory bus DDR1 memory module, for example, 512MB/1GB DDR 1 running on 266 MHz to 533 MHz.

Hope this helps. Make sure u come back here if u still have further request.

Monitor or Desktop itself problem?

that status line was designed together with your OS, it seems that your PC was getting slow in boot..

A number of factors, having little to do with the age or capabilities or your system, can create excruciating system slowness. They include the following:

Operating System
File System (how you've organized files on your PC)
Applications
Hardware

The Windows OS (operating system) is notoriously inefficient, which can affect performance. The file system also impacts Windows and hardware performance. How you work with applications can improve system speed, as can some basic hardware updates.
