Heat dry will consume steam which is generated by heating the water inside the dishwasher. Air dry is natural but will take longer cycle time. Use rinse aid to improve air dryer and aviod water spots on glass.
Your dishwasher has been designed to use a liquid rinse aid. Pouring a liquid rinse aid into the proper recepticle in your dishwasher when you add dish detergent greatly improves drying performance. You can further improve drying performance by selecting the Sanitize option, in addition to the other options you've selected, and increasing the water temperature. For Best Results, use Jet-Dry Turbo
Spots and film form in your dishwasher's rinse cycle, when detergents are already down the drain. FINISH® JET-DRY® Rinse Agent works in the rinse cycle, lowering the surface tension of water and causing it to sheet. Better rinsing results in less spots and film.

The rinse cycle is the same as the wash except the wash uses detergent and the rinse uses rinse aid.
The rinse cycle will dispense rinse aid if you have filled the dispenser. Check this first, that would be the most likely cause. Also in the spring as the water table table in most cities begins to rise the water quality goes down, extra calcium in the water can cause this problem.
Here is a link to help understand that. Let me know if you have questions.
Maybe try rinse aid like jet dry, some people forget to keep the rinse aid filled up or the rinse aid nozzle gets a encrustation build up from the rinse aid. Also check your water for hardness, you may need to use a water softener to remove hardness, filter alone will not remove hard water. One way to test for hard water is with a test tube or something like it and add 2 drops of washing up liquid, and shake the water and soap and see if you have a lot of bubbles or if the bubbles disappear quickly, if there is a lack of bubbles you probably have hard water and may need the mentioned water softener.
It is common thing the inside of a dishwasher is very nasty even though it cleans you dishes it is best to run a dishwasher cleaner through the unit ever other month I do my ones a mouth jet dry makes a good cleaner it is sold right beside the rinse aid
Open the door and check it with a level. If the dishwasher isn't perfectly level, turn its feet (behind cover at floor) until it is level. If the jet bars can be removed, take them off and rinse them out. Make sure they're engaging with the pump outlet properly. There may be a plastic bushing that the main wash arms rotate on. If this is worn, replace it. It will make a world of difference. Finally, make sure you're using enough detergent. I suggest the cheap powdered type. It seems to have the best cleaning ability. Finally, make sure the rinse aid dispenser is set to dispense enough.
The reason why i asked you for the make and model no. was that the rinse aid dispenser was actually banned on many older dishwashers because of a fire hazard. As far as the dispenser, try using bleach, not too much, 1/2 cup and run with out dish washing soap. it should work.
