The card and router are both Belkin N1, No's F5D8071 (card) and F5D8231. When I contacted belkin they told me to try changing my wireless security settings but i would have thought that if that was the problem then the mac would only run at 54 also.

Problem solved, changed the security authentication to wpa-psk and the encryption technique to aes instead of tkip. Now getting 300mbps steady with the n1 card on the xp laptop and 150 on the vista with the built in wireless.

These caards and wireless router can be tricky. The problems you are encountering may have to do with the brand of the router and card. If they are mde by diff. manufacturers or the speed on the box is different than the router, then it will be slower. Is your card 801.1 or a tiny bit different? Make sure they are the same number. Otherwise, you may have to make do with the different speeds, or else, call your isp to upgrade
