I have a 1TB lacie external drive that we have been using for about a year now with our mac mini. This has been working fine & all iphotos & itunes and certain applications are stored on the device. I am also running leopard which we upgraded to around xmas time and we have been using time machine to backup onto the lacie. As of monday - time machine would not work and we could not download to itunes - and the amount of songs were about a 5th less then we know we have in itunes. tried to get time machine to work but wouldn't. shut down the mac thought about it and went back to it last night - now the lacie cannot be seen by the mac - I have gone into disk utilities shows it's there and I can eject it but I cannot repair or verify .... don't know what to do PLEASE HELP

My Lacie external drive has been working fine for a couple of months, since I bought it, but now when I turn it on a pane comes up entitled "Disk Insertion" explaining, "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." and then shuts itself off.
I have important audio multitrack recordings stored on my Lacie and need to retrieve them.

I ran into this issue this week with my lacie big disk 500G external. Unit would power on when plugged into a pc blue light would flash and nothing no connection ding from windows.
Blue front light would flash repetedly slight ticking sound from drives but no connection i finally fixed this and gained access to my data by opening up the case and pluging my pc 12v connectors into both drives to power them up but leaving them connected to the lacie internals worked instantly and ive since copyed all my data off my 500 and will just transplant the drives to internal use on my pc. you cannot connect the drives internally and then copy the data due to the fact that they are raid 0 stripped drives so this hybrid setup works if your external case isnt powering up the drive correctly as mine wasnt.

What plug are using to plug it up? a usb plug? try another port.

some wires or cables are rated for higher frequency and speeds.

windows xp plug and play gives that sound as it sees a port being plugged into then a desktop comes up asking you what you want to do.
I had a ethernet port on my compaq go out while under warrenty but just put in a new linsky card in it. they wanted me to send it to them.
hope this some help

The manufacture should have a techline and they can walk you through it and find the problem on the phone ... via hardware or software.

SOURCE: lacie hard drive nonfunctional

You can try buying a new HD enclosure, then removing the HD from inside the one you got and mounting it inside the new one. Try also disconnecting completely the power cable from your computer for five minutes and then plug it back to the power and restart it. I know it sounds weird, but sometimes usb mass storage devices suffer troubles caused by electrostatic charges.

Your hard drive is toast. If the computer doesn't recognize the hard drive and/or you hear a constant turning sound then your drive is broken and can't be repaired. You'll have to have it replaced.

Hard drive motor just cant get a full head of steam going

When the motor and the heads start getting noisy, clicking and whirring, and the hard disk access time gets abnormally longer than usual, that means that the disk can fail at any time.

Better saving all your data and get a replacement drive.

Two units conflict when connected thru Firewire 400

Windows XP and most pcs running it does not natively support firewire,as it was developed by Apple computers. Most Firewire ports on PCs are 4 pin. Your PCI card ( and I take it, its a desktop youre referring to ) should have a 6 pin connection. Firewire connections also have a 7 watt supply via the bus. You may need to open the computer and see if the molex jack on the card is being powered by your computers power supply. Two firewire drives, especially the power hungry Lacie quadras, may be to much consumption for the card. Hope this helps.

Can't Connect

Hi Jesse. Have you tried, or can you try the drive on another computer ? That's a good way to check if the drive itself is getting defective. I'd try that one first ! It could be also the firewire cable, have you tried another one ? Else, it could be the hard drive in the lacie inclosure that's getting weak (you might wanna backup your data if you ever get it to be recognized, if there's anything that's important on it), or the lacie enclosure's firewire controller that's doing freegames. I've seen such problems more than often, and if nothing has changed in your setup since it was working, i'm betting on the failed drive. They aren't that reliable as we know. Hope that helps a bit. Thanks! cheebster.
