5100 says the carriage is not moving freely from side to side, or there is grease on the clear plastic encoder strip behind the carriage. You can clean the grease with a Q-tip and alcohol, but also look inside on the far right and left sides for anything like paper scraps that can stop the carriage.

Error 5100 - I got this error because I forgot to remove the tape and packing from the printer cartridge carriage!

ERROR 5100 means that there is some foreign object blocking your ink cartridge carriage that disables it from moving. It may be a piece of paper or a scotch tape or a staple wire. You may try cleaning also the encoder strip with a moist tissue paper. Furthermore, you may also try cleaning CAREFULLY the contact points of the cartridge holder and the cartridge itself (those shiny bronze pins) with a moist lint-free cloth.

Had the same problem, i just replaced the black ink cartridge which was finishing at that time and resetted the counters. No problems after that. Not sure whether this will help though.

Please reset the printer
1. Turn off your printer
2. Press and hold the STOP/RESET button
3. Press and hold Power ON button
4. While holding the Power ON button, release the STOP/RESET button
5. While holding still the Power ON button, press twice the STOP/RESET button
6. Release the Power ON button
7. Wait until it display an "idle" message. It will take about a minute.
8. When "idle" appear, open the top cover to expose the cartridges.
9. Lift up the cover for cartridge holder and take out both the black and color cartridges
10. Return the cover of cartridge holder and turn off the printer
11. Return the top cover and turn on the printer again
12. After the printer initialize, return the cartridges.
1. Press and Hold the STOP/RESET button and wait until it self restart.
2. Release the STOP/RESET button the the printer is restarting.
3. Wait for a few seconds

As a technician, I have worked on tons of printers. This particular error had stumped me for a while, but I finally found the cause. As others had pointed out before, it can have alot to do with some obstruction in the print path, the gears, or ink on the clear plastic encoder strip. You're on the right track - I found the the purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) was not lubricated well enough from factory. If you lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps) the mechanism can now slide more freely, and the unit can park the head properly without giving you the dreaded head homing error 5100 (or E-2-2 on the LCD display) Keep in mind that this repair will probably require you to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism. There are two screws behind the printer, and two in front for each corrosponding side panel (the front screws are behind the grey front panel of the printer - open the top cover to see the clips which hold the front cover on) Hope this helps some of you out.

Cancel printing, turn off the machine. Then clear the jammed paper or protective material that is preventing the FINE cartridge holder from moving, and turn the machine on again. If not remedied, turn off machine, unplug the power cord of the machine from power supply. Plug machine back in and turn power back on. If problem is not resolved, please contact service center. This error is one of the
most common issues with Canon printer. Let me share my experience and how I used to fix this
First, turn off the
printer, unplug the usb cable and power cord. Now, also turn off the computer
(it needs to be restarted since the error is showing on the computer and will
never go until you restart the system).
I hope you are not using
longer usb cable other than the one that came with the printer. Sometimes long
and defective cable causes this problem.
When you turn on the
machine, open the lid (front panel door) and help move the cartridge carriage
with your hand so that it'll move sideways. Sometimes when the carriage stuck,
