It sounds somewhat similar. The top of the picture starts down maybe 3" for the top of the screen. It seems to overlap at the top like the image is folded over. This can look like lighter and darker lines of whatever is on the screen. If the top of someone's head is in this area it folds over and is seen upside down and distorted on top of the ok portion of their head. This issue started gradually as just a brighter line at the top but has progressed to this. I've had the TV for about 1 and a half years. What is the standard warranty on it? I've gone through the various menu items for the TV but saw nothing that would address something like this. I've tried unplugging the set for over a minute and then plugging it back in again to see if it would reset anything.

You have 3 or 4 capacitors in the video section that are bad, 2.2uf , 4.7uf, 3.3uf and maybe a 10uf all at different V's.

Best to take it to a reliable repair facility where they know what section to look in. Be safe as the tube can knock the LIFE out of you if you don't know what you are doing.

Projection sets have two very common problems outlined below.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. The TV can also shut down when the convergence starts to fail.

Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith, RCA and others.

You can more info and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from TV Repair Kits using the link at the end of this article.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped or bowed
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

THAT THIN WHITE LINE IS YOUR HORIZONTAL LINE MEANING YOU ONLY HAVE THAT. THE GOO NEWS IS YOU HAVE HIGH VOLTAGE MEANING YOU ONLY NEED VERTICAL TO FIX IT.. I WOULD REPLACE THE VERTICAL TRANSISTOR OR CHECK FOR ANY BURNED RESISTORS ON THE VERTICAL SIDE

White lines

These are retrace lines. This may be a fault in the blanking circuits. On some occasions a weak CRT can also cause blanking lines to show.

This is something you would not be able to service yourself. I would suggest to have an estimate done on the TV set for you to decide if it should be serviced or not.

Sounds like retrace lines. Leaky caps or worse can cause this.. Are you getting any vertical foldover at the top of the screen?

When you have the back off, look for the flyback (high voltage) transformer. This is the part that has the thick red wire protruding from its top which attaches to the top of the picture tube with a suction cup. On the flyback there are 2 controls, the bottom one is screen and the top one is focus. Turn the bottom control (screen) down (counterclockwise) until the white lines go away and the brightness looks normal. Then turn the top control (focus) until the picture is nice and sharp. If the F connector has been pulled out and the TV has RCA (red, white, yellow) jacks, use those jacks and set the TV to INPUT.

Top of the screen Picture Problem

sound like you have 1 or a couple of leaky/bad capacitors in the tv's vertical circuit, typically, there sould be 5 to 10 caps. in all, but you just need 1 bad one to cause your problem. good luck.
