Disc is either to scratched or may have a hairline crack on disc. If this happens to all of your disc's, then you have a laser read problem. This can be caused by high humidity as well as dust and debri. Try blowing the unit out with canned air.

Try this first on the original remote. Insert the batteries backward and make sure that they make contact with the terminals in the remote control(stick a piece of metal in there to make sure all the posts make contact), then take them off and install them correctly and see if it works, it's a long shot but i've had some luck using this method. now, for the question regarding if the new remote will work, well, i couldn't find the correct code for your receiver using the RCA universal control. The receiver brand(Phillips) is not listed so it probably won't. Here's the RCA control's codes. Just copy and paste the link.
Your dvd lense need cleaning . For that buy lense cleaner disk from nearest computer shop then put that disk into cd/dvd rom then play it then it clean dust from lense then you can use it again . But if still same issue then you need to replace your dvd lense . Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using FixYa.
Your problem is that you bought a Phillips instead of a Sony. Quality vs. Quantity my friend.
Anyways, your DVD player is set up to play region 1 and the disc you inserting is probably some other region. Look on the back of the DVD case and it will say what region you can play the disc on. Also, clean off all the smudge marks on the disc with some glass cleaner and this disc won't play if you got a lot of scratches on the thing.
If the above didn't help, then your fuc..d, cause your laser pickup is dirty or defective. Run a DVD laser cleaning kit through it, which is available at all the big box stores. See if that helps out any. If not, then your truly fuc..d and you need to call the manufacturer if this thing is still under the 1 year warranty. If your under 30 days, then just take it back to the store and exchange the thing out.
You might try taking the back off and using a can air on it.do not use the can of air up close. Use it in short bursts. Also use a dvd cleaner the laser eye may be dirty. You can clean it off with a q-tip and alcohol. Make sure it is dry before use. Wait at least 5 minutes to be safe. Un plug it first. Be careful not to touch anything in there especially the boards, They are sensitive to electricity in your body. Most techs wear a static wrist starp.
