Question about Panasonic PT-47WX49 47" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

TV shuts off in a few seconds after plugging it in the wall.

The first problem was the blue convergence so I replaced the IC chips and one 2.2 ohms 2 watt resistor. The tv did work before the replacements but now it will only stay on for about a few seconds.

Panasonic PT-47WX49...I had my laptop connected to the tv and was watching some videos on the tv this way and then the tv just turned off on its own. I used the remote to try to turn on the tv but it would not work so i pressed the on button on the tv but it did not work either. So I unplugged the tv and then plugged it back into the wall. The tv seemed started to turn on and stayed on for a few seconds and turned back off. When it turned off, i pressed the on button but nothing happened. The power on button will only turn on the tv for a few seconds and then not turn on even for second after that unless I unplug it again. Only then will it turn on for a few seconds and then shut off again. Is there any way that i may be able to fix this problem on my own?

Thank You Premtech, I don't know if the IC's were Sanyo original or not but it was a STK392-110 and as for the resistors it wasR7059 and R7005. At I replaced the IC's and resistors I got the same problem just like heewony discription. I'm go to replace the IC's with 150 and check all the resistors, Thank You again.

Panasonic (PT47WX49E). TV turns itself off within seconds of turning set on. What could be the problem?

yup I just replaced the ic's 2 weeks ago and was working perfectly. then today my kid got behind there and unplugged it. now there is a strange whining sound for about 3 seconds then it kicks off. aaahhh! are the ic's bad already? and would it being unplugged from the wall cause this?

I am having the exact same problem, started last friday nite (3/7/08), my panasonic 47" just shut-off! Now it will only come on for maybe 2 seconds and only after I unplug and re-plug in. I bought this set at Costco exactly 5 years ago @ $1400. and would expect it should last longer than this!! Hope someone can offer some advice or give me a rough est. on how much it will cost me to get it repaired. Thanks

Where did you get your amps? If they are not Sanyo originals that could very well be the problem and Panasonic are bit more picky than others. Also what did you replace with the 110's or 150's? Going to the STK392-150's will give you a bit more reliability.
The 2.2 ohm resisto you replaced was it the usual R7048? Make real sure to meter the rest of them for change in value.

I have a toshiba 61h70. the tv had been shutting down after and few minutes and the red bulb was flashing also. I replaced the IC Chips and it resolved the flashing and shutting down issue. the green and...

You need to look with a meter at the resistors around the chips, they are usually gray in color with bands that denote value--a good guess is one or more were taken out by the chips--in these sets they will look fine---typical is 1.8 ohm (brown, gray, black bands).

At least one is open (bad--no reading across--like checking a fuse) and there will be several with identical color bands on them.

Let me know if I can help.

I have some distored blue color across the screen

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

f0add3d.jpg

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

93a1209.pngCONVERGENCE SOLUTION

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Projecton tv not turning on

Three blinks is short protection----the most common cause in panasonic sets is a shorted convergence IC---most use 2 STK-392-110 ic's;they are located on metal heat sinks next to each other(Ic is black with STK and number in white on it)

I have details on replacing this if you are able; if not find someone in your area to do this; What I usually do here is gain access to the 2 ic chips and UNSOLDER BOTH OF THEM(each has 18 pins) with them un-soldered turn the set on---if it comes on the convergence will be out the window but it tells you instantly one of the two chips are bad.

Both must be replaced and any of the 2.2 ohm resistors(light blue in color) around them that are white in the middle(gone) also replaced.

The chips can be purchased on Ebay and for less then 20 dollars total parts cost.

If you are not able to do this repair yourself--this is the slow time of year for TV repair shops---find someone local (make sure they change both chips!)

This repair should be able to be done in your home----If you have questions or would like the general instructions let me know.

Unit turns on for a few seconds then turns off

Usually in these sets the 2-2 error code is a shorted convergence IC----they are protected in most models (don't know your exact model number) by two pico fuses(they do not look like glass fuses and are usually in the power supply--little green parts that look like small resistor--amperage is marked on them and usually they are 5 amp) the fuses can be checked like any other type of fuse---if one or both of these are open the set will detect no voltage to the convergence chips and shut the set down. If you locate the convergence chips look for any discolored or burnt resistors around them----in most models they are light blue in color and marked 3.9 ohms---if any are white in the middle they are gone---

PT-47WX53G wont turn on 3 blinking lights from the power area.

If the red power LED is blinking 3 times--it is most likely a shorted convergence IC---the only way you can be sure is to remove the light box--I can tell you how by email--and unsolder the two STK-392-110 ic chips----they are on two heat sinks made of aluminum next to each other; if you open the back cover and find them you will see about a dozen blue(light blue) resistors marked 2.2 ohm----if any of those are some what white in the middle(discolored) they are gone and the set will never adjust until you replace them and the two convergence IC chips---What I usually do in this case is remove the light box and unsolder both IC chips and plug it in and turn it on---if the set now comes on and stays on--I replace the IC chips and adjust the set---I have done hundreds of these sets---3 blinks is almost always a bad convergence IC--if this was helpful give me a vote---AND IF YOU NEED DIRECT ASSISTANCE contact me at:

Philips rear projection tv-wont turn on

Sounds like your Convergence chips failed, were your red/blue/green colors slowly seperating or was the picture starting to curve on the top or bottom or both? if so see below general post.
Also what model # is your TV and what size?

51MP392H/17
Actually I have this TV and you need 2 Convergence IC's STK392-120's (120's and 150's will work) of course order 2 of the same type I'm using replacement 150's they allow for a little higher heat and were cheaper ALSO you need to replace the 12 resistors with 6.8 ohm metal film resistors, make sure they are metal film! don’t skimp out here I did and then they blew and fried my IC's and I had to replace everything again!

Great reference link that I posted pictures on, check out page 3
http://www.techlore.com/forum/thread/16736/Magnavox-51MP392H-17-51-quot--TV-has-double-vision/

Where I got all my parts that worked:
Suburban Electronics http://www.suburban-elect.com/

Manual Library you should find all you need here:
http://www.techlore.com/group/2/list_downloads

What you need:
(2) STK392-120 OR STK392-150 IC chips
(12) 6.8 Ohm Metal Film resistors
set of star screw drivers
15 watt pencil solder pencil, DO NOT use a high watt iron you will fry the surface mounted item.
good leaded solder, and flux

BTW if you don’t plan on trying this and are going to throw out the TV, I still need a IC convergence board for a 51MP392H/17 TV I'm fixing, I'm willing to pay S/H and buy your IC board that’s not been tampered with. Edwinkraus@hotmail.com

Yes your model uses two convergence ICs they are STK392-010 alot of people say change only one but thats wrong as one IC controls red and half the green circuits, and the second one controls blue and the remaining green. so if one IC goes it places a strain on the other one because of the green. So change both and you will avoid having to do it all over again in a few weeks. Heres a link where you can get new replacement ICs and they provide free instalation instruction as well as free on line instant messageing when youre ready to do the actual repair which takes about an hour from start to finish. heres the link.
