I think there is a button on the remote that will unlock it.
It is some sort of child safety lock.
It hit it by mistake once and was going crazy trying to figure it out. I think the button is near the bottom of the remote.

How do I stop my DVD player from switching to standby mode after only playing for a few seconds?

I would think this down to internal power problems caused by faulty components (capacitors mostly) many items these days by "some law" have to meet stringent power consumption rules, this means unlike old gear which had power supplies built like tanks to keep going, modern versions have only enough energy to cope with their load without much to spare.
So they work nearly flat out at times which heats up some parts leading to failures (also related to part quality which I note is getting better through various means of regulation).
I would think your unit staggers on to work but as demand for power goes up, safe circuits cut in to shut it down protecting it and you.
It would need to be checked out by a service engineer if you can find one willing (if its a big named brand they have service agents) more sure to fix it than a large store brand, who want to sell another.
Lastly an odd but Very Rare thought is I have had remotes that require service which due to their problems fire a code at frequent times which "bother" their device (hide it under a cushion say) though I think my first thoughts are more its problem.

Hope it helps

Sudden split screen

Your dvd player is in progressive mode, and your tv isnt capable of playing progressive mode.  To fix this, look on your remote for a button called "Progressive", and press it.  If you dont have a button like that, then look through your service manual for anything that says progressive mode, and it should give instructions on how to set it back to interlace mode.  This is a very common problem I come across when servicing DVD players, as inadvertently pressing the wrong button the remote will cause this.

There should be a button on your remote labeled "safe." Press that, and it will turn the safe mode off. It's on the second row from the bottom on my remote.
