Try this one:
if you are using windows XP

- click start
- click run, in the run type in regedit
you will see a registry editor window
in the registry editor window

- click the + sign at the hkey_local_machine
- click the + sign of system
- click the + sign of currentcontrolset
- click the + sign of control
- click the + sign of class

there will be bunch of random letters and number under that control
try to find this one
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

if you click this check if you will be able to see DVD rom at the right side of the registry editor window
you must delete the upper and lower filters
after that restart the computer and try to put in dvds

for vista or win7

- click start and type in the start search regedit
after this just do the same thing with the win xp instructions

----------------

if still doesnt work try to uninstall/reinstall the cd/dvd driver

---------------

try also to update the DVD codec. you can also try to download the most updated windows media player, power DVD or any software/program that have dvd codecs or that acts like a player for DVD

i hope this works.

Dvd cd rom [ code 10 ] does not work

The Code 10 error code is generated when Device Manager has insufficient information or the error that is bubbled up by the device drivers is not recognized by Device Manager. Additionally, this error may occur when one of the drivers that the device needs does not start. If many drivers are being used by a particular device, it can be difficult to determine the one that failed.

The Code 10 error resembles the following: This device cannot start. (Code 10) The most common resolution is to update the drivers that are associated with the failing device. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In the device's Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab.
  2. Click Update Driver to start the Hardware Update Wizard.
  3. Follow the instructions to update the driver.
Note You may be prompted to provide the path of the driver. Windows may have the driver built-in, or the driver files may still be installed from the last time that you set up the device. If you are asked for the driver and you do not have it, you can try to download the latest driver from the hardware vendor's Web site. uparrow.gifBack to the top Typical Code 10 error issuesThe Code 10 error pertains mainly to hardware and device driver issues or to compatibility issues between hardware drivers and additional software that is installed in Windows. Dear Sir/Madam, I have a Dell notebook with an Optiarc RW AD-5540A DVD player. Now I have "error code 10" = "the device cannot start". How can this be fixed? I am not computer literate, really. thanks....

An error code 10 error occurs when Device Manager can’t start a hardware device. This error is usually caused by corrupted or outdated drivers, so most often the solution is very easy.
  • The first solution to to restart your machine. Some error messages can be caused by a temporary problem.
  • Next, did you just install a new device or Windows update? If you did, this might have caused the problem. Either roll back the driver you installed, or use the System Restore to undo recent Device Manager changes.
  • The most common fix for a Code 10 error is to uninstall and reinstall your device drivers. If it is a USB device device is generating the Code 10 error, uninstall every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers hardware category in Device Manager as part of the driver reinstall.
  • You might also try to update the drivers for your device, if a more current version is available.
  • You can run an update for the Windows Service Pack. There might be a patch available which will solve your error.
  • If none of the above solved your problem, you should take out your DVD drive and test it in another laptop, if possible, or connect it to a desktop computer using a converter.
  • If all of the above solutions don’t fix it, you might need to replace your DVD drive.
To update the DVD drivers, you have to search your computer manufacturer's website for the drivers. However, here's an easy way:
Use this driver scanning tool, which scans your computer for the needed drivers. It has an option to automatically retrieve them for you.

You can download this free tool from here, or directly from this link.

After you have downloaded the above file, double-click on it and follow the simple steps to install it. Then, when it asks if you want to run it, just answer yes. This is easier than manually searching, downloading and installing the drivers.
Hope that helps.
Regards,
Raspal

Cd rom not working. In the system devices it is listed with a yellow mark on it when I check the status it says "this device cannot start. (code 10)

Delete it from system devices, then reboot so it will be rediscovered. If that doesn't work, turn it off and physically detach and re-attach it. If that doesn't work, replace it.

Optiarc dvd rw ad-7561a ata device

had the same issue and was able to resolve it by going to HP Compaq's websibe (for you it would be eMachine) and they provided the following information & i uninstalled the driver in device manager after running the below fix, scan the system for new hardware and the DVD drive appeared with the correct driver. hope this helps. good luck.

------------------------------------------
To resolve this issue, remove upper and lower limits from the registry. Upper and lower limits are points of your computer's registry that control the drivers for your specific device—in this case, the optical drive. Remove upper and lower limits from the registry using the Microsoft Fix this problem link below: c01733077.jpg If Microsoft's automatic fix does not resolve the issue, try using the other methods listed in this document to troubleshoot the issue.

Cd/dvd

Try deleting it from the Device Manager and rebooting. If Windows has eaten the driver, it will try to reinstall it during the reboot.
Follow this sequence:

- Start
- Control Panel
- System
- Hardware
- Device Manager

Locate the entry for DVD/CD-ROM Drives and expand the listing.
Highlight the drive(s) and delete them.

If the Plug & 'Pray' is working, Windows will 'find' a new device and install the basic drivers for it.

CD ROM not working

from microsofts site:

Code 10 loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation'); If the device has a "FailReasonString" value in its hardware key, that string is displayed as the error message. The driver or enumerator places this registry string value there. If there is no "FailReasonString" in the hardware key, the following generic error message is displayed:
This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10)

Try upgrading the device drivers for this device.
Solution button: Update Driver

To resolve this error code, make sure the device is connected to the computer correctly. For example, make sure all cables are plugged in fully and that all adapter cards are properly seated. Follow the suggested solution button and update the device driver. It may be possible to remove the device and redetect it using the Add New Hardware wizard
