Re: gateway 831 GM won't boot up no signal is showing in...
It sounds like the problem is either your power supply OR the motherboard. A power supply swap doesn't take long or cost much. On the other hand, replacing a motherboard takes 30 minutes or longer and can cost upwards of $100!

Hi jdr_dlr519! Pardon me.... but did your friend connected the monitor cable correctly on the system unit? Cleaning the fan will not break your computer... however, if he forgot to disconnect the power cables before opening the unit, it may do a damage.
Check the condensators. If there are not any blown condensators or leakage, keep the video card (or at least the one on board if any) and remove all the other cards, also the memory. Check the CPU with a known good motherboard. If the CPU is ok begin by adding the memory, one bar at a time (you may alternate the slot also). If the computer do not start the motherboard is defective . If the computer starts but no sound is heard motherboard could be defective. Try to install a previously checked memory. If you do not get any signal the board is dead. If you get video signal, add one card at a time until you identify the bad component.
