Ram,

It sounds like the problem is either your power supply OR the motherboard. A power supply swap doesn't take long or cost much.
On the other hand, replacing a motherboard takes 30 minutes or longer and can cost upwards of $100!

Please let me know if this helps. Good luck!

ohhhhhh a running Gateway, (nastalgic to the max)
the beeps are gfrom the motherboard.
they have meaning,]'
there is no standard, only the gateway book on your PC
covers it. t
these are called cold boot errors from BIOS ROM.
can be bad memory
or bad video card.
if you have 2 or more memory sticks?try them one at a time in bank 1 slot (lowest)
if that works try a spare video card.

Disable other bios setup and enable only the hard-disk.The procedure is these:put on your machine for the first time immediately press (F2) button.if it refuse to display off your machine and restart Then immediately press (F9). when it display the setup locate and select boot menu it will display all the booting function such as: CD/DVD RW, HARDDISK,ADAPTER AND SO ON just select each one it will show two options:ENABLE/DISABLE. you just select disable for others except HARDDISK should be ENABLE.finally, close it and apply save& exit.restart your computer it will definitely boot up.

Hi jdr_dlr519!
Pardon me.... but did your friend connected the monitor cable correctly on the system unit? Cleaning the fan will not break your computer... however, if he forgot to disconnect the power cables before opening the unit, it may do a damage.

When i turn my computer on my momitor wont come on without my help i have to push the button on side of monitor6 time then it comes on

Are you giving the computer time to begin sending a signal to the monitor. Some computers send a brief low resolution signal during BIOS load, then put the video back into sleep mode while loading the operating system. The video drivers are usually loaded fairly late in the boot/OS load cycle. You may just not be waiting long enough.

sounds like your system is booting up and running due to the hold power shutdown procedure. you might try replacing the video card or adding one if your video is integrated.

The 831 only supports 2 gigs of ram any more and it wont start. You can probably fit a 9800 in it but would be a very tight fit.

Gateway GT5228 booting problem

"Also after I try to turn it on after a couple of unsuccessful tries, it actually boots and the machine works fine". This maybe cause by the hardware problem. And it usually caused by the motherboard. Changing the motherboard unit may solve the problem. But make sure you've already done the basic test on all of your hardware before changing it with a new one.
