The TIVO is connected to the Cable Box using a Serial Connection. The tivo can no longer communicate with the Cable Box. The Cable box works fine and can change channels. I bought a new Serial cable, but still I can't get the Tivo to change channels when I use the Tivo remote or when I have programmed a program to be recorded.

Set up your infrared blasters connected from your IR port on the Tivo and by placing the two lead lights in front of your cable box so it (the cable box) can read the signal. Then go to Channel settings accessed through Tivo Central and follow the questions. It will ask you to change channels until the remote is working correctly. This all worked on a different "input" on my Mitsubishi TV (it has multiple inputs. I have the cable input on a different "input" to make it work.

You may have to set the channel 3/4 switch on the lower right rear of your TiVo to match the output setting of your Apex converter. If your Apex converter is equipped for L/R audio and video output you will get better results using a three-conductor cable to connect to your TiVo.
1) Connect the Tivo using the coax output of the cable box into the cable input of the Tivo
2) Exchange cable boxes with your cable provider for one with composite output jacks. It may require you to use a Motorola box that isn't High def depending on what your provider has. I know Comcast has a Motorola HD tuner that has composite outputs as well as component.
3) Upgrade to a Series 3 Tivo. Those units are designed for High Def. Use HDMI cable hookup.
Since the Series2 doesn't do HD, you don't need any fancy connections, and it's pretty simple to hook up.
1) Disconnect the cable that's connecting your cable box to your TV, from the TV end. 2) Connect the end that *was* connected to your TV, to the "input" on the Tivo. 3) Get another piece of the same cable (coaxial cable), and connect the output of the Tivo to the input on your TV.
You may just need to go to Best Buy and get a piece of coaxial cable to connect the Tivo to the TV.
I re-did the guided setup in the Tivo under Messages & Settings/Restart-Reset System/Restart menu section in Tivo. Once I did that, it cleared this issue, even though I didn't have to change any of my settings thru this guided setup. I tried a reset alone first, but that did not fix it. Only this fixed it. We had lost both power and cable during a recent tree fall in a storm, and when both were restored, this problem started. I have a cable coax directly in the back of the TV (no cable box/IR etc) and the system is on a home wireless network. I actually have 2 identical Tivo's in the house set up the same way but only one had this problem. The other worked no different after the outage.
Yes, the Tivo will just record in standard definition, instead of high def.
You can still hook the two up together, though.
What I would suggest (and have done in the past) is this: Split the cable coming out of the cable box. Hook one up to your HD cable box, and the other up to the Tivo. Hook the output of your HD cable box to one HD input on your TV Hook the output of your Tivo up to a different (non-HD) input on your TV.
This will allow you to watch HD while recording standard definition, and vise versa.
Running the HD through the Tivo will work, but will limit you to not be able to watch HD through it.
