This is not a solved problem. I have exact same problem. We just got an hp officejet pro 8500 due to our last hp 7580(all in one, i think that was themodel) quit working. both printers are doing the same thing. if you scan and print, color is fine, if you put photo on a memory card and use slot on front of printer and print from there, color is fine, but i also you lightroom and photoshop and the pictures come out noticeably darker than what they show on the screen and what they really are. I did in the past with the old printer notice that the colors came out correctly when you using a hp photo software, although i dont recall what it was..
so here is what i know so far... and i will use lightroom as an example.. if you go to your printers page on your pc, and go into properties of your default printer, the 8500 in this case and select *show preview* when you try to print it will come up on screen before going to the printer, this is great while trying to troubleshoot color problems as you wont actually print yet and waste paper and ink. if i use lightroom and just let it stay by default and "let printer manage colors" the color photos are quite a bit darker than they are supposed to be... but if you change a setting in lightroom, where it lets you select a color management profile" there is one or two that actually will get you close to the correct or natural color of the photo. I shouldnt have to do this but i can be a fix for the problem, just keep selecting different color profiles from the program you are trying to print from and leave the settings set up to "show preview" before printing and keep trying till you find one that looks good. I am not clear why the pictures dont come out correctly by default from programs such as lightroom and photoshop, but for me, they dont...very very annoying and i have been on phone with tech support twice and they really were no help, saying to clean ink cartridge ends with rubbing alcohol and running printer through cleaning and alighment modes, all of which make absolutely no differece.. since you can see the color distortion on your pc if you have the "show preview" option selected, you can tell that the color is being distorted somewhere between the communication between your photo software and the printer drivers.
if anyone has a better idea of how to solve this idea, i would love to know..please i have tried this with both vista 32 and 64 bit so i know that doesnt have anything to do with it..
again, printer prints fine from a scan or reading from a memory card, its a compatibility issue between your printing software and the drivers for the printer somehow messing with the color output
Please get the correct driver here :
