I have a singer 503A. The bobbin winder will not spin. I have replaced the little rubber ring: still no winding. Is the ''spindle'' the ring runs on suppose to look like screw threads or am I missing a piece? I have been trying to find a visual diagram with no luck. The machine is lovely.....just need to wind the bobbin. thanks /Claudia
When you have the winder rubber on try and turn the winder by hand, if it does not move the chances are the winder has seized, if the winder wheel is moving but not the spindle then the grip (thread) has worn, if you cannot move the whole winder by hand and it has seized you need to get some WD40 and spray a few drops down the spindle, take an electric drill and put it over the top of the spindle and switch it on slowly and it will probably free it off, be aware of oil splashing out.
you mighjt get a digram from www.tandtrepair.com
Yes, the spindle is supposed to look like screw threads. No, you're not missing a piece.
I had the exact same problem on a machine I bought last week. Mine wouldn't turn either, even though I had oiled it and could easily turn it by hand.
Here's how I fixed it: I removed the bobbin winder, then wrapped a small bit of ordinary duct tape around the spindle, counter-clockwise so it wouldn't unwind.
That provided enough friction, and the bobbin winder started turning. I then clamped the foot control and let it run for a few minutes to "run it in." Then I removed the duct tape, and everything ran just fine.
So apparently there was gunk in the bobbin winder, despite the oil I'd given it. Once it ran long enough, the oil worked in and the gunk worked out, and then it was fixed.
Looking back, there was no reason to remove the duct tape from the spindle. It wasn't hurting anything, and provided a little more friction to the bobbin winder. The bobbin winder tire would probably last a little longer with the duct tape in place, as well.
Lookinf dor a manual for my singer 503A, with directions on how to use the machine
