Question about Microwave Ovens

Sharp microwave runs when door closed

Our microwave (Sharp R-1451) has been running fine for years. Yesterday it has begun to run (makes loud fanlike noise different than oven fan noise), when the door is closed. In addition, the keypad is nonresponsive for the most part. For instance, I have unplugged and can reset the time, but can't set a cook time or Sensor Reheat, etc.

Thank You

OK, so I opened up the panel, discharged the capacitor and looked at the switches figuring they would be cheap enough to replace. I suspect I've found the problem because the top one is loose. It sits on a prong on the upper rear such that when the door is shut the front end swings down and I assume that causes only the partial circuit with the other switch? Can you recommend a way to reattach this switch so that it will not swing?

This was spot on - Adding some epoxy to the lower corner of the switch where it attaches to the front of the panel is able to hold it in place against the door shutting and now it works as before.

NOTE to others who try this: This Microwave is 10 years old and the reason it broke is that the plastic tab holding the switch broke off from the pressure of the door being shut. I broke at least 3 other little tabs getting the front panel off (1 on the front and 2 on the opposite side) without applying that much pressure! Panel is still a little loose, but that's a problem for another day.

one of the two safety door latches is broken in my dcm24s microwave which sits atop oven. Door won't open- door open button not engaging-trying to open door by inserting L-shaped non-scratching tool.Tight fit of this microwave- tough to pull out- do I need service call - If I get door open- ? epoxy broken latch- does it sound as though I will need a new door opening mechanism-? spring disengaged or whatever.

    Help

    Thanks

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or sometimes a problem on the control panel.

I would suspect the door switch mount has a broken tab allowing the switch to swing down when the door is closed, not allowing it to really be activated.

Also, even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

Switch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

The ideal solution is to replace the switch holder (latch hook or door hook, as it's called) but that is a lot of work and it's critical to get everything aligned properly.

If you decide to go that route, you can get the part from Tritronics athttp://www.wehaveparts.com

Other folks (including me) simply use a spot of hot glue or epoxy (JB Weld is best, but 2-part epoxy is fine) to tack the switch in place on the mount.

But it's critical to make sure everything is squeaky clean and dry before applying the glue and allow it to dry / set for several hours or overnight before reassembling the oven.

Looking forward to my "FixYa" rating for getting this right on the nose! :)

THE FAN AND MICROWAVE TUBE RUN OFF THE ELECTRONIC TIMER. OPENING THE DOOR SHOULD SHUT IT ALL DOWN AND WHEN YOU CLOSE THE DOOR AGAIN YOU SHOULD NEED TO PRESS THE START BUTTON AGAIN. IF NOT, ITS SOUNDS LIKE AN ELECTRONIC RELAY IS LOCKED CLOSED ON THE TIMER BOARD.

Microwave oven runs when door is open, and does not always run.

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch or a loose door switch mount, which are pretty simple problems to fix.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

Door switch or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa:.

If you only need a switch, you can order a universal type here for $5 postpaid.

Emerson MW8119SB microwave wont stop running with door closed

It should have a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

I'd call Emerson at 1-800-695-0098 to find your nearest authorized service center to have it fixed free.

It's probably a bad door switch or door switch mount.

You should be able to get a replacement keypad, and that's not a hard job for a DIYer.

If you're interested, post your correct brand and model and I'll give you a more specific suggestion.

(Your post subject says Jenn-Air M169B put it's posted under Sharp R-316FS so I'm not sure which you have).

If it's a Jenn-Air, you can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383
