The print spooler service is not running

Restarting the Print Spooler
  • Before completely resetting the print spooler, you should first attempt to restart the print spooler service to see if it fixes your printing issues. To do so in Windows, open the Start menu and click on the "Control Panel" icon. Then open the "Administrative Tools" folder and double-click on the "Services" icon. Scroll down to the "Print Spooler" entry and click on it. If the service is not currently running, click the "Start" link on the left side of the window. If the print spooler is running, hit the "Restart" link. After the service has started again, try adding a new printer or printing another document to see if the issue has been resolved. if not do the following:

  • Reset the Print Spooler Files
  • After successfully booting your computer into safe mode, you can remove and reset the system's print spooler files. Open the Start menu and click on the "My Computer" icon. Go into the C: drive and navigate to the "Windows\System32\Spool" directory. Open the "Printers" and "Drivers" folders and delete all of the contents in them. Once the files have been deleted, restart your computer again and boot in standard mode. The print spooler files will be reset and the errors should no longer appear.

  • If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response.

    Thanks, Joe

I have an HP printer scanner 1310 series. Have trouble with printing. It will run about 3 blank pages through before it will print. Then it will run a page part way through so have to open back to get it...

    Hi Audrey-

There are many things that will effect how your printer handles paper. The most overlooked being the size of the document or image to be printed. If the image or text bleeds over the edges (left, right, top, bottom) of the document, several sheets can be ejected before the "visible" printing takes place. Often those first few pages look blank, but actually are the outer edges of your picture or text. If you are printing a large picture or large text document, this may be your situation. Try printing a document with just a few words on it (like a small email) as a test.

The second most common culprit is dusty, dirty feed rollers in the printer. Consult your HP 1310 series manual for instructions on cleaning the feed rollers, or consult this general cleaning article on HP.com. HP PSC 1310 All-in-One Printer series cleaning

The type of paper can also effect how many sheets are pulled into the rollers. Is the paper new?, Thick?, Very thin?, or is it the same ol' printer paper you've always used? Either way, remove the stack of paper from the feed tray, "fluff" it by fanning it (like flipping through a book very quickly, or the way Superman counts a stack of money!) and replace. Print a test page.

Let me know if this helps!

Printing does not start until I restart computer

Drivers are very good. If you will go on the website and look for the firmware(not the driver) for the printer. This is the "driver" for the printer to communicate with the signals of the computer. Sometimes, it needs to be updated if the manufacturer finds they need to be more compatible with more operating systems, such as the new Vista. Hope this helps.
