Add memory to HP/Compaq nc6000?

By stressbag on Mar 01, 2008

Hi,

My nc6000 has 256Mb of memory and runs slow. I notice on the performance meter that memory usage is staying near 100% when I have an Internet browser open.

Should I increase the memory, or is something else causing the memory use to remain high and PC to go slow?

- Ta Kegtapper...

I have no manual, have checked swapfile and that is OK.

How do you put in more memory in an nc6000?

Pete

- Thanks Kegtapper,

There are about 12 screws underneath, not including the one's marked with the keyboard symbol. Do I undo them all?

Ta,
Pete.

Dear ,

Before upgrading memory please try these options,
Delete temporary files.
Defragment your hard drive.
Make Virtual memorey double the Physical memory.
Make sure that you have sufficient disk space free for memory swapping paging and for temporary storage.
remove unnecessary programs from windows tray.
If these tips help you and satisfy the performance of your notebook. Else its my opinion for you to upgrade the memory.
Regards
Rafique

Yes you should increase the memory. XP runs suitably well at 512mb. At 1GIB it blazes.

The memory meter is pegged because it is having to use the Harddrive as ram (Swapfile) which is 1000x slower than RAM.

XP with nothing on it, straight from the factory will run with 256, but after 3-6 months of use, and adding applications it will get progressively slower.

- Upgrading memory is in the owners manual and the web. beyond the scope of this site.

Adjusting swapfile is available on Google search.

- Take the cover off the bottom with a Phillips screwdriver.
insert memory at a 45 degree angle, push down until you hear click. Tangs on the side will lock it in place.
