Philips ToUcam Pro II - Astronomy imaging

Hi,

I have a Philips ToUcam Pro II (PCVC840K) and am trying to get it to wrk on Vista int he same way it used to on my old XP laptop.

Whilst I can eventually get the drivers loaded using the workarounds suggested in http://toucam.philipspcstuff.com/ , when I am using Vrecord in Vlounge to start recording video it does not allow me to change the video properties so that I can adjust.things such as brightness, gain etc. When I go to the menu and choose Video Properties, nothing happens. This is essential for astronomy imaging applications.

I also noticed that the installer for this camera that comes on the CD does not run well on Vista with some USB string related errors.

Anyone have a solution to this? Is there some other software around that can run this web cam in Vista and allow video properties adjustments?

Cheers,
Jim

    Hi,

unfortunately there is no option for updates in VRecord. According to Philips web site, they do not have any Vista upgrades...

    Cheers...

The main issue I think is that the Philips tools are not installed correctly. There is a NoUSBString error.

At best other programs can only control thisngs like brightness and contrast but not the gain which is needed for astropghotography...

thanks for the info - unfortunately I need to run this in Vista - when I run this it still comes up with the NoUSBString error...

  • katjim Mar 01, 2008

installing the pcvc840k driver (for XP) on the Vista laptop gives same NoUSBString not found error...

  • katjim Mar 01, 2008

Hi - thanks for the tip - I had actually already tried this and whilst the camera works for windows functions such as msn, it won't work properly for the Philips VRecord program - I still can't get the advanced controls to work (wg. gain)...

    cheers,
    katjim

unfortunately no - see my previous reply...I had already tried the unofficial driver, but there is still a problem in accessing the Video Properties in VRecord which means I can't change the gain of the camera...

I have also tried the progeam Debut which also can make the camera function but I only have access to the Brightness, Contrast and Saturation controls...

It looks like I may have to go back to XP to use this camera properly...

    cheers, katjim

Hi sweet_rascal - not sure why you didn't get my previous message - I actually already tried your suggestion and whilst the camera will work in a simple mode, I still cannot run Vrecord and get access to the advanced controls such as gain...I think I may have to go back to XP!!

    Cheers,
    katjim

    here ...follow this

    howto

Philips TouCam II PCVC840K on Microsoft Windows Vista (32-Bit)

    (Should also Work With PCVC720K-P PCVC730K PCVC740K PCVC750K
    )

NOTE: These are not official philips drivers.
They do not support this driver. This is just a workaround that might
enable you to install the webcam under Vista.

    1. Download the following file: Drivers

    2. Connect the webcam ( Windows wont find the drivers) However it does install the microphone driver.

    3. Go to the folder where you downloaded the files to and extract the File called: "Philips_Toucam vista.zip"

    4. Go to Start --> Computer Now select "System Properties" at the top of the screen.

    5. In the System properties screen, on the left select "Device Manager"

    6. In the Device Manager, under Audio there should be a Philips Toucam Microphone. Also there should be a unknown device listed.

    7. Now rightclick on the Unknown device and select: "update driver software"

    8. Select: "Browse my computer for driver software"

    9. Click on "browse" and select the folder where you extracted the files into.

    10. Click on next and wait till windows finishes searching. If you egt a warning select "Install this driver anyway"

    11. After this windows should gave you a message saying the install was succesfull.

12.After clicking close the Device Manager Should look like this:

    13. Your webcam is now installed and
functional in programms like MSN. There is no Philips software
available for this device that runs in Vista.

Hello!
As far as i know that there is updates of this kind of cam, You can try downloading this driver IN XP ( this not run in other version of OS.) http://www.camera-drivers.com/drivers/126/126908.htm, you can run also for phillips drivers related errors.

Webcam problem

Normal 0 How much memory do you have installed in your computer? It may need to be, increased, as this is likely to be the cause of your computer freezing, rebooting, or shutting down.
Hope this is of some help. Bud

Can't get it to work

Try uninstalling the software and removing the camera from the usb port. Reinstall the software and reconnect the cam in a different usb port. If still not working try in a different pc to make sure the camera does not have a fault. If it works in another pc then the camera is not compatable as can happen on some pc's and you will have to try a different make of camera.
