Recently purchased a pc laptop. got dsl hooked up but do not know how to make the laptop wireless. if i unhook the cable i lose the connection. the tech support said i would have to set it up for wireless. the manual is not helpful at all.
That laptop has a wireless card in it already. Also HP requires signed wifi cards in order to work so going to the PC store is a **** shoot with most major brands. (IBM/HP/Compaq/Sony) (Acer/Dell/Asus don't seem to restrict them)
First Make sure you have an access point. Your DSL/Cable provider can sell you a cable modem or dsl modem with this option. You can also get your own but if you don't know what you are doing you could be opening your computer to the rest of the neighborhood.
After that is set up....
Your laptop should have two network icons near the clock at the bottom of the screen. (it may be hidden click the arrow) One is the wired network card and one is the wifi card. Click the one without a connection (it will have a little x on it)
Click it and it should show you the accesspoints near your computer. Select the one that was setup in the previous step.
Hope that sorta helps. This subject isn't easy to explain.
No prob mate, all pc can be wireless:just go to your local pc store and ask for wireless network card.you can get ones for usb or pcm .setup disk and accessories inclu.follow instructions and probably online 10min later.
I use a trendnet network card when people ask to sort out net related problems and I recieve networks before the software has finnished instalation.

Does your DSL not have a wireless router? If not, you can certainly get one for cheap...walmart has Belkin/Netgear/ASUS wireless routers for about $40...the instructions are pretty straight-forward. It's a cheap and easy. let me know if you need assistance.
what do you mean by hook it up? Do you mean internet service?
All new laptops have Wi-Fi capabilities, but you must be in range of a free service. In order to get dedicated service, you will need to either purchase an aircard from a provider such as sprint, verizon,AT&T, or get hooked up through your local phone company(DSL), or cable service- they will provide you with the modem.
Are you trying to hook up the laptop wirelessly to the pc? because then the pc would need to have a wireless card as well....sounds like I need more info, but if you are trying to do what I think you are, you should just get a wireless router instead, hook the pc tower directly to it via ethernet cable, and then setup the laptop to connect to the router. The router would hook to your dsl or cable router....what service do you have?
you have the internet on desktop pc and you want to connect your laptop right?
open control panel select network set up wizzard and follow instructions for shared network.
if you connect dsl to notebook you need to have installed modem device drivers and configured device and done basically everything you had to do on pc,by disconnecting dsl from pc obviosly youre gonna lose the internet.
get your self a wireless router if not already have one , that way you set up pc wired and link laptop via wireless
The phone jack does not fit because it is an RJ45 network port. If you are using a cable modem or router for your dsl connection you should be able to connect directly with a cat5 network cable.
Or if you have a free USB port you can purchase a wireless adapter like THIS ONE and use it via the USB port.
This model has a wireless network adapter built in, so if you are on DSL isp connection you need a wireless DSL modem/router, if cable then a cable router to attach to your cable modem.
