Hi,

With the indulgence of chimpster...

Alternately, you can try using a CD cleaner readily available from most computer shoppes/stores. Another that you can try is to manually clean the optical reader by opening the unit and using plain cotton buds to do so. A can of compressed air would also be nice in cleaning the nooks and crannies for any dust particles that can get back to the reader.

Should problem persist, then I guess chimpster's posting would be the way to go

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa..

Trevbrew,

It isn't unusual for DVD players to quit reading. The problem is caused by either the laser diode in the optical pickup assembly or the digital decoder circuits becoming defective. BOTH repairs cost more (upwards of $100) than just buying a brand new player.

I recommend buying a new DVD player.

Please let me know if this helps. Good luck!

DVD spinning slow and get a 'No Disc' message

Hello,
The problem sounds like the spindle motor is about to go out completely. If a disc does not spin or does not spin at it's proper speed the optical lens reading laser can not read the disc and you get a "no disc", or "disc not recognized" error message. On average a dvd will spin 3 times faster than a regular cd will. The following pictures will show you what these components look like.

Check around your local area to find what a service technician will charge to replace the part. On average it will usually cost between $60-90 dollars most of which is labor.

I hope this gives you some idea of what the problem is and how to solve it.

If you would not mind, please rate my help. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

Dr787t won't play disc. Player won't recognize

You can try to stop this by dis-assembling the unit to gain access to the laser and you can clean the laser using a cotton bud or cue tip, if that doesnt solve the issue, what you can do is with the case off, put in a dvd and see if it spins, and also note if the laser is lighting up, if it isnt lighting up or if the disc isnt spinning you may need to replace the dvd loader of the unit.
If the laser doesnt light up and the disc doesnt spin its possible you may need to replace the MPEG Printed Circuit Board which you will fing attatched to to the dvd loader via small ribbon cables, be carefull when removing these if you need to remove them or a seriens of small plugs. I hope this helps. Good Luck.

He dont recognize the disk

Put a disc in with the label facing up and note the orientation (ie rotation) then when the disc ejects, see if it's in the same orientation (rotation). If so, the motor is not spinning the disc and it would need to be serviced.

No disc displayed

The disc won't spin until the unit recognizes that there is actually a disc there. Try cleaning the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. If that fails, try playing a CD. If the CD plays, the optics are starting to fail as reading a DVD requires higher laser power.

DVD not reading but spinning

Are you using +R discs(not the -R)? Use Sony brand +R or try using a few +RW's and see if that corrects the problem.
