Video is sporadic. Will work on a cold boot but if any adjustments are made to the resolution or the pc is rebooted, it will be a black or dark screen. Have tried adjusting resolution, replacing/adding Ram mem, put hard drive in another laptop all with same results.
Re: Video is sporadic. Will work at first but if any
This Presario uses the 256 MB dedicated ATI Mobility Radeon X600 Video Display card according to the manufacture's website. Also this system came from HP with Windows XP or Windows Vista. This may be a driver issue. Dealing with video driver issues can be difficult, but there are tools that can help. If you are using Windows, boot into Safe Mode by pressing the "F8" key during initial startup. You will be presented with the option screen with many choices. Pick Safe Mode without networking. After a second, Windows will boot into Safe Mode. From there go to the Control Panel and then to Add Remove Programs (XP) or Programs (Vista & Windows 7). Find the program(s) from ATI including - ATI Software Uninstall Utility - ATI Catalyst Control Center - ATI Display Driver These may prompt you to reboot after each removal, please select a manual reboot, or reboot at a later time. Once all the ATI items have been removed, restart the computer. The system will reboot and it will load a generic driver. The screen may look different as the resolution has changed. This is normal. Go to Softpedia and download Driver Cleaner to finish removing the drivers as they are still cached in the system. The link is here at http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/Other-DRIVERS-TOOLS/Others/Driver-Cleaner-Professional-15.shtml Install and run this tool to finish the removal of the cached ATI Driver files. The screen may flicker, this is normal. After completing the installation, restart the machine again. When the reboot has completed go to ATI to obtain the latest driver here at: NOTE: If you are using Vista, please make sure to obtain the correct driver for the 32 bit or 64 bit operating systems. This information can be found by right clicking on "Computer" in the Start Menu, then selecting "Properties". Once this is up there will be displayed the related information on your system. Look specifically for "System Type" and it will read "32-bit Operating System" or "64-bit Operating System" (Windows XP) http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Legacy/Pages/radeonaiw_xp.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.19&lang=English (Vista 32 Bit) http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Legacy/Pages/radeonaiw_vista32.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.19&lang=English (Vista 64 Bit) http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Legacy/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.19&lang=English Select the Catalyst Software Suite. It is a large file and will require time to down load. Save the file to the computer. Once you have it you will need to run it. Installation will run then ask to reboot. Reboot your system. You may notice again the screen flickers. This is normal and the machine may also be slow for the first few mins after reboot. After a few minuets have passed you can adjust the screen resolution by right clicking on empty space on the desktop and selecting "Properties" (XP), then the "Settings" tab or "Screen Resolution" (Vista). The factory specs for the Presario are WXGA+ (1440x900) max resolution. After adjusting resolution I suggest going to getting the latest version of DirectX (DX 9c Feb 2010) from Microsoft here at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en This may also be a large file depending on what the installer needs and will require time to download. This should complete the driver installation. The Driver Cleaner tool can be removed now form the computer.

If your VGA connector is connected to a video card put it in your onboard VGA connector if the problem is still there. Remove the video card from your motherboard then boot on safe mode then adjust your video resolution. Here are some steps on how to boot in safe mode on your computer.
Turn on your computer.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Right click on the desktop then click setting then adjust the resolution on lower resolution. The normal resolution for VGA is 640X480. Then click apply and restart the computer and in normal.
The resolution of the video output is most likely not supported by the display you're connecting it to. The widows boot logo is a lower resolution then it switches to a higher resolution after that. Can you connect another monitor to the system at the same time? You could then adjust the resolution to the second monitor to a lower resolution until it starts working.
The maximum/native resolution for this display is 1024 x 768 @ 60Hz, you need to adjust your PC video resolution, it is too high right now for the Viewsonic to work. Hook up your old monitor and set the new resolution, otherwise bootup in safe mode (hit f8 key while booting up) and choose VGA support, set the new resolution, reboot.
Hi,
The reason behind the out of range (frequency of monitor) because the video display adapter is trying to set resolution more than what the monitor (screen) is capable of. In this case, try to boot your computer in Safe Mode using F8 function key while starting your computer. Once you are in safe mode, try to decrease the resolution of monitor to the lowest resolution level and apply the settings. Now try to boot computer in normal mode once again, you will get the settings which you have applied in safe mode. Adjust the screen resolution accordingly till the settings work with the monitor (screen).
Cheers!
If you are getting a splash screen (COMPAQ) then video goes black, you can try this. Boot system in Enable VGA mode from the F8 menu and see if you get to the desktop. If you do, you can then go to display properties and adjust the resolution to the Optimal for the monitor.
If you do not get a splash screen, check you cable connections and ensure the Video cable is properly seated and no bent pins. If issue is occurring after the system was moved, also ensure that the correct video adapter connection is being used on the tower, as there may be 2
You can press F8 repeatedly while booting to get the Boot options screen. It should contain a VGA Mode - this will boot your regular desktop with a lower resolution. Once in windows adjust the screen resolution to one that your Monitor supports.
Right click the desktop anywhere. Choose properties. Go to the right most tab "settings". Slide the screen resolution option until its where you want it. Click Apply. Do Not Hit any keys on the keyboard. Wait until it finishes changing resolution than click Ok. Close the Window.
If your screen goes black during this waiting 30 seconds should automatically revert it to the previous settings.
