Help! My DVD and CD/RW drives both don't work. The problem started suddenly about a week ago. I can open and close the drives via the buttons on the front. The device manager listings show the drives to be present, but with yellow exclamation points. Clicking on these results in a failed attempt to load the Windows troubleshooter. What next?

Re: dell dimension 8250 optical drives not working
May I suggest using a laser cleaner cd? Also open your case and unplug everything, followed by a thorough Air Dusting. After you've finished air dusting everything, plug everything back in and give it a shot!
Please let me know if this helps, and sorry for the late response. My friend's father died and its been a heck of a month. Take care!

Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver You might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd restart your computer then plug them back this should activate the found new hardware wizard
If there is a small hole on the panel of your dvd drive push a straightened paper clip inside until you feel it press down this will open up the drive.
Hi! You may have a problem with the optical drive/CD rom drive. The lens may be dirty so i suggest you run a cd lens cleaner. If it still doesnt help, I believe you need to buy a CD rom replacement. Hope this helps.
First thing I would try is to go into windows device manager and uninstall both drives. Now turn off the PC and reboot it. Let Windows plug and play find and reinstall the drives. If it cannot find drivers, and you don't have the driver disks, tell it to look in c:\windows\system or c:\windows\system32, your current driver sould be in those folders. Gordon, if this doesn't do the trick, let me know and we'll move on to other possibles; but this should fix this problem about 80% on the time.
your answers unfortunately is yes and no... not very helpful eh? :)
you see the DELL B110 can come with any type of optical drive including a dvd burner but you have to opt for it when you buy it. If you are unsure or want to find out more about your machine then click on:
Start menu> Control Panel> System> Hardware> Device manager
In that screen you can see all of the hardware that your PC has installed.
there is a particular one that we want to see and that would be the CD/DVD hardware if you press the little plus sign and you see that DVD RAM (not rom) is installed. then you can burn DVDs.
That said the easier way to find out is to stick a blank dvd into the drive and try to burn something with Nero (a cd/dvd burning software).
If i can help you with anything else pelase feel free to ask
Unfortunately optical drives do have a short life span, you can buy a replacement from newegg.com so cheaply these days its not worth messing with the old one.
I have just bought a DVD-RW dual layer OEM (so I had the burning software with it) for a new build I am doing for $28 plus delivery.
