Dell dimension 8250 optical drives not working

Help! My DVD and CD/RW drives both don't work. The problem started suddenly about a week ago. I can open and close the drives via the buttons on the front. The device manager listings show the drives to be present, but with yellow exclamation points. Clicking on these results in a failed attempt to load the Windows troubleshooter. What next?

Thanks!

I'm running Windows XP Professional, ver. 5.1.2600.

We tried removing the upper and lower filters, but it didn't work. The tech who helped with this was surprised it didn't, and gave up after a few hours of whatever else he could think of.

I'd like to try reinstalling the operating system, but because the problem is with the optical drives I would be using to load it, it is possible that the installation would fail and I would be left with a large paperweight instead of a computer. The tech (a friend who does network support at a local university) said that this had happened to him recently and didn't recommend trying it.

Thanks again very much for any other ideas you might have.

Thank you very much for your help. The drives work now. We unplugged and reseated the cables and then reinstalled the operating system. This seemed to work at first but then the problem resumed. We then upgraded Windows Media Player to version 11, which finally seems to have fixed the problem.

Chimpster, I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Thanks again.

Which solution helped? Probably they both did, but the main issue seems to have been that some piece of software overwrote some critical registry entry or entries. I suspect either winamp or realplayer, both of which insisted that I upgrade them to fix "security problems" that were not defined. When I gave Microsoft media player a heavy club and told it to make itself my primary player, it reset whatever had been unset, and now I can run again.

As an epilogue, I've given up on both winamp and realplayer, switching instead to iTunes, which works just fine.

    Thanks again!

May I suggest using a laser cleaner cd? Also open your case and unplug everything, followed by a thorough Air Dusting. After you've finished air dusting everything, plug everything back in and give it a shot!

Please let me know if this helps, and sorry for the late response. My friend's father died and its been a heck of a month. Take care!

Which solution helped? Mine or the other guy? Or both?

    (I'm confused) :)

I'm glad. It's good to know which solutions work, not in a competitive manner by any means, but rather to learn for the next time. Nice working with you!

Unable to open dell dimension 8250 cd-rom drive

Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver

You might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd restart your computer then plug them back this should activate the found new hardware wizard

If there is a small hole on the panel of your dvd drive push a straightened paper clip inside until you feel it press down this will open up the drive.

Hope this helps.

Hi! You may have a problem with the optical drive/CD rom drive. The lens may be dirty so i suggest you run a cd lens cleaner. If it still doesnt help, I believe you need to buy a CD rom replacement. Hope this helps.

Dives on Dimension 8250 will not read without first using "eject"

First thing I would try is to go into windows device manager and uninstall both drives. Now turn off the PC and reboot it. Let Windows plug and play find and reinstall the drives. If it cannot find drivers, and you don't have the driver disks, tell it to look in c:\windows\system or c:\windows\system32, your current driver sould be in those folders. Gordon, if this doesn't do the trick, let me know and we'll move on to other possibles; but this should fix this problem about 80% on the time.

Just a question about Dell? Dimension?

Hi kevinstacey7,

your answers unfortunately is yes and no... not very helpful eh? :)

you see the DELL B110 can come with any type of optical drive including a dvd burner but you have to opt for it when you buy it. If you are unsure or want to find out more about your machine then click on:

Start menu> Control Panel> System> Hardware> Device manager

In that screen you can see all of the hardware that your PC has installed.

there is a particular one that we want to see and that would be the CD/DVD hardware if you press the little plus sign and you see that DVD RAM (not rom) is installed. then you can burn DVDs.

That said the easier way to find out is to stick a blank dvd into the drive and try to burn something with Nero (a cd/dvd burning software).

If i can help you with anything else pelase feel free to ask

DVD - RW WONT WORK -

Unfortunately optical drives do have a short life span, you can buy a replacement from newegg.com so cheaply these days its not worth messing with the old one.
I have just bought a DVD-RW dual layer OEM (so I had the burning software with it) for a new build I am doing for $28 plus delivery.

I want to upgrade from cd rw to dvd/cd rw

If you are looking to replace the internal drive, then as long as you purchase a drive with the same interface it will work. If you are looking for a USB external drive then any one will work.

The only thing Dell was correct with is it should have +/- signs.

DVD and CD RW Driver are not working

You might have knocked the cable our when installing the extra ram.

Take the cover off avail and find the cable that connects the motherboard to the first drive then then the second.

Push it in firmly at all 3 connections

If this doens't work try removing the ram and rebooting - see if your drives come back
