Question about Refrigerators

New Refrigerator Past Warantee Not staying cold

I have a two year old Kenmore R134A refrigerator with top freezer that just started not staying cold. The freezer is OK but also seems not as cold. Bought it brand new - past warantee though and not sure what to look for.

This is a 6 1/2yo unit (I think this is the product number) and first was not getting cold on freezer side so emptied it looked for frost etc and brushed/vacuumed/cleaned accumulated dust from condenser coils and have an intermittent problem with loss of cooling--compressor runs smooth and quiet..at time may not be cold (ie 50F) and then that PM 28F in freezer..naturally with single compressor the refriderator side seems effected too although initially it did not seem to be effected ( it too is sporadic as cool right now)

thanks I see I made my post a little confusing but tailing on to the Kenmore question...MY refrigerator is a Kitchenaid Superba 48in built-in unit and the rest is accurate. I am sorry for the confusion and frankly don't know if it matters.

actually it was working OK but I worried about long term so had guy from the Sears service come and check it he says it is a bad compressor...not knowing anything I suppose it could be but right now it runs quiet and the freezer is 20 degrees and fringe nice and cool. Does that make sense?

It sounds like your condenser coils need to be swapped.

Replacement parts are available from the manufacturer and aftermarket suppliers. More conveniently, you may be able to find replacement parts through the retailer that sold you the refrigerator or at an appliance parts store.

Please let me know if this helps. Good luck!

Even built-in units have condenser coils. Try to get them swapped by a technician in your locale if you can.

Not an easy refrigerator to diagnose but here is a link to a Service Manual=> HERE Go to pages 21 through 23 and try to do the diagnostics. The problem could be several things including a defrost failure. Otherwise you will need to get a technician out to help you resolve this. I will try to help you should you need ask.

Neither the freezer or the refrigerator side will stay cold. It is 11 years old.

11 years old ... will not cool ... will cost about $100.00 to have it looked at and if it is a compressor, that will be another $250 or more. Efficiencies have increased significantly in the past 11 years. Might make sense to replace it. Check with your utility, they may offer a buy back plan if you upgrade your frig.

On the other hand, you could have it repaired. It could last a long time yet ... but it will be a costly repair in my guess.

New Refrigerator Past Warantee Not staying cold

is the fan in the freezer running? if not then the air cant circulate and nothing will cool properly. if is running, is there frost build up on the inside back wall of the freezer? if so you have a defrost problem. if no frost on the back and the fan is running, remove the back panel inside the freezer and make sure all of the silver coils have light frost on them. if only part of them are frosted get out your manual and look at the warranty section. then seal system may have a 5 year warranty. if it does then call sear for warranty service. if the coils only have partial frost and its not under a 5 year warranty buy a new frig. because repair will cost more than its worth
