I was playing a game and the PS3 shut down itself. When I restarted the system it said, I need a system update. Before I had a chance to perform the update the system shut down again, and I have not been able to turn it on again. When I restart the system, yellow light comes on, then the red light starts blinking.

The Best way to fix a problem like this is to use a PS3 Repair Guide.

You can find a good one here:

My PS3 is also just over the warranty date. I have had a problem once before where my old ps3 suddenly didnt work atall. I took that one back and it was replaced with a new one. Now my second PS3 has got this problem where it attempts to turn on, shows a yellow light and then cuts out with the flashing red light. Coincidently i was also in the middle of playing grand theft auto 4, and my game is also imprissoned inside my PS3. At first i believed that possibly the PS3 was just overheating and cutting out so that it did not cause any damage. I unplugged the whole thing for a day and when i turned it back on it was still faulty. I tried switching plugs, however i still keep getting the same result. It would seem that when i first started turning it back on it would take a few minutes before it cut out. But now i am lucky if it is even on for 2 seconds, leaving me confused and trapping my GTA4 game within its thin mouth!

I think that it is quite obvious that grand theft auto 4 is part of this problem. Or maybe Sony just want us to waster our money on a PS3 that has faulty guts.

  • snikyljt Nov 27, 2008

I was playing CoD W@W and it suddenly froze with a scrambled picture, then shut off. Turned it back on and it was fine started game and everything, then the next day I went to watch a movie that I had Down loaded. During about 10 min. in the system shut off, this time however I press the power button and the fans start with green light switch to a yellow flash followed by a blinking stand by light.
I have read some other forums who say there is no yellow light where the standby light is, but it seems that the quick change from green to red emitts some kind of yellow flash.

Playing COD5 my PS3 turned off in the middle of a game, I waited then turned it back on and it worked for about another thirty minutes then went off again and now it wont come back on at all the game is stuck inside and when you turn the power on it does the same series of lights green then yellow then flashing red.

  • Anonymous Feb 05, 2009

Mine happened on Feb 1. I did all the suggestions on ps network. Then I start to fill out the repair form then the next page pops up. Asking me for $149 to have it fixed or replaced. I see online alot of other people have the same issue and contact Sony via phone. They say save up the money over a couple of months then send it. LOL. I asked to speak to someone higher and kept getting an assistant CS manager. I then e-mailed Sony's customer service hoping to get a reponse...it was automated. I just today notified the BBB. I think it is something we all should do as consumers so that Sony would recognize the problem.

i think is because i save my games a lot..
on Fallout 3, everytime i got to a new check point i save it.. then i save too much.. it shut down.. :(

Same problem... Yellow light of Death ( like 360's RROD), I've read that its the power supply that might have burnt out.
If your out or warrnty, then either put it into a repair shop, or crack it open yourself and try to re-align the mother board ( which can pop out after a over-heat, or try replacing the power supply.

I'm going to bust mine open tonight...wish me luck LOL

Same problem with lights and cod4 stuck in it. I found turning the switch on in the back while pressing the eject button made my disc eject and the fan comes on but then all buttons freeze. Atleast I got my disc back.

If your PS3 has a flashing yellow light then you have the yellow light of death problem, plain and simple.

This is caused when excessive heat levels warp the solder around the processor chip and the RSX graphics processor on the BGA (ball grid array) This then causes your console to malfunction and the yellow light to display as a "warning sign". It only happens on a small percentage of original model PS3 consoles.

If your console is still under warranty Sony will send you a refurbished model for free (this means you will lose your saved games, trophies, and downloaded content) However, if your warranty is expired it will cost you around $120 USD to get it fixed.

You can also fix your PS3 yourself by "reflowing" the motherboard, thus fixing the faulty BGA. It's a fairly long process to write out, but you can see it in-depth and for free at the following PS3 yellow light repair blog. There are also 6 videos to accompany the guide.

This is not a real solution on how to fix it yourself, but I have the same problem with the yellow light. What I did was call sony told them my problem (it happen on 5/15/09) they told my my warranty expired in March 09. I request to speak to a supervisor since this was not a problem I caused, I was place on hold about 5mins later the rep came back on line said they will do a complementary fix for free. They are sending me a box as we speak. When I talk to the rep I was not rude, very polite so if you call them with this problem try to be nice. It might or might not work, but try if it work it can save you the $149.

Try taking the hard drive out thats normaly the problem if you can format the hard drive it should be fine but you will loose all saved games but you will keep online stuff and stuff

Posted on Mar 10, 2009

I have the same problem and these are the possible solutions I can come up with:

1) Return as faulty if you have the warranty
2) Try cleaning the vents
3) Try turning it on a different day
4) Try plugging it in a different room to see if it works

Posted on May 10, 2008

The same thing happened to me, my ps3 is just past its year and the warrenty has run out. Sony had no solution only that it could be the power cord, I switched the cord but no luck and I also have a game stuck in it. The place I bought it from said as its a 60gig and they are waiting for some reconditioned ones to come in they will exchange it for me, I am one of the lucky ones but have to say I pissed with Sony now.

Hi,

If it,s under Warranty. Return It As Faulty.

theres not really much information anywhere, regarding PS3 errors or faults, so it,s unlikely you,ll get any help anywhere.
It appears to be booting to an error Green/Ok Yellow/standby ( maybe ) Red/Failure.
The Only thing you can do here, is trial and error.
remove anything thats physically removable, such as Internet/Cable. Controllers And anything else, i,m more into The computer and x-box specialities myself, so i hope you don,t persecute my ratings, by offering possible solutions. Hell theres no one else out there trying to do anything. ( refering to the Internet In general ) for my beloved Fan Club here :)
Ok, back to This problem. no internet connection. Then no controller. Boot and see results.
Ok stage 2. try booting with a Gamedisk Or DVD in The drive.
Stage 3. now try 1 controller on every port, not sure how many these have 2 or 4.
Stage 4. try different combinations of power On hold button in 3-5 seconds.
Stage 5. boot up, and when booted, remove power at plug.
Could act as a power failure, Hard reset Effect.
This Is the Best i have to Offer, and if your lucky, we might get a result. If not well we,ve tried to solve it.
the actual problem could be so many things, Console initialisation, hard-drive fault-mainboard fault-Graphics/Cpu fault.

If it,s warranted send it back for repair-replacement.

please keep me posted, if you have any sucess, this may be helpful to other users.

Good-Luck Mike @ compurepair.

Sorry, but you have the yellow light of death. This is not fixable using ordinary household equipment. Call sony, yellow light normally means catastrophic hardware failure.

Yellow lights

Yellow lights and blinking red lights indicates general hardware failure on ps3. If your ps3 is still under warranty call Sony and they will send you a new or refurbshed one. North America: 1-800-345-SONY (7669) United Kingdom: 08705 998877
Now you could try doing a few things (hey it's worth a try!)
1. Turn off the switch in the back and wait a few minutes. Turn it back on and try it again. If that doesn't work it may be dead.
