Locate the exhaust manifold, there will be 8 bolts attaching it to the engine block. Remove these bolts, they may need penetrating fluid to loosen them. Slide the manifold off the exhaust studs.
Remove the gaskets, scrub where they have been with a wire brush and refit new ones. Use some gasket sealant to affix them and replace the manifold. Start at the middle studs and work outwards in a criss-cross formation.
Torque up the studs to the correct settings (check the manual) and don't overdo it as you could crack the cylinder head (been there done that).
Start the motor and check for any leaks around the manifold, if so, check gaskets again for a good seal then try again.
That is a nice boat, but a major repair. If you have rotten wood, and need to replace it, and need to remove ballast, you have a big job on your hands. I don't think the wood members are called studs, I think they are thrwats or something like that. Are they bent? As in 2x2 oak? A boat yard will tell you how much it will cost, you can do it yourself, and you can't, You need special tools for this, A big steamer, and somebody with hands on knowledge. The materials are probably the cheapest part of the job.
Its purpose is when you stop the boat it fills with water. The boat is built light in weight to get better peformance, the bad part is that it floats like a cork when you stop.To allow these ballast tanks to fill with water when you stop, creates a stable and solid hull that reduces wave reaction.Once you take off,it all drains out.It slows initial acceleration but once drained, you get the best of both worlds. Many larger and expensive boats use this same principal to get the same result.100 ft boats may take in as much as 10000 gallons. It dulls the affect of the waves.Hope this helps
